Los Cabos Taxi Drivers Protest, Do Travelers Need To Worry?

Last Updated

The ongoing feud between the taxi drivers and other transportation providers in Los Cabos is about to explode in anger and frustration again as the two parties can’t come together with government regulators to find a solution to the issue.

The problem is that tourists enjoying their vacation getaway to the beach resort destination are unfortunately caught in the middle between the two groups.

The Feud Continues

Vehicles on Los Cabos roadway

Recently, taxi drivers took to the streets of Los Cabos, in front of one of the large tourist resorts, to protest the conflict between the taxi drivers, and their union, and what they call the “pirate” transportation providers.

According to reports, the drivers and union are demanding action from municipal and state authorities to resolve their complaints about the transportation providers after what they have called “no progress” being made on the issue.

Prior to that, it was the transportation providers that took to the same location days before protesting the actions taken against them as the enforcement of a transportation law went into effect in Los Cabos.

Again, tourists were caught in the middle between the two groups and were forced to exit their transportation and were forced to walk to the hotel instead.

One Month Later

It was about a month ago that this feud really came to a head when tourist transportation drivers were targeted as part of an enforcement action for the transportation law in place in Los Cabos.

The enforcement action led to several transportation drivers being unable to drive because they did not have the proper licensing and insurance requirements as mandated under the transportation law.

The transportation drivers then took to the streets, blocking many of the major roadways in Los Cabos.

Unfortunately, this included the Transpeninsular Highway in Los Cabos and the popular toll road bypass.

Because of this, some tourists experienced delays in getting to and from the Los Cabos International Airport.

Other than some experiencing longer than normal trips to make their way to the start of their beach resort vacation getaway, other travelers actually missed their departing flights.

The problem led some major United States airlines to issue travel alerts for visitors to Los Cabos regarding the ability to get to and from Los Cabos International Airport on a timely basis.

It also created a fear among some that a similar travel alert could soon be issued by the United States Department of State.

Where the Issue Stands

The two groups continue to be committed to discussing the issues and government officials are eagerly trying to find a solution that accommodates the needs of both audiences, as well as travelers.

After a month, the only resolution agreed upon was that the tourist transportation drivers have agreed to suspend their road blockade activities as long as the discussions continue with the taxi unions and taxi drivers.

However, it does not appear that overall, the two parties, and the government negotiators, are really any closer to a resolution than they were about one month ago.

Tourists have to unfortunately still plan ahead for issues getting to and from Los Cabos International Airport, as well as around town in Los Cabos, until the issue hopefully gets resolved.

So far, the United States Department of State has not taken action to issue a travel advisory regarding the ongoing dispute between the taxi and tourist transportation drivers and its effect on United States travelers.

The advisory level about Baja California Sur, the state where Los Cabos is located, remains at Level 2 – Exercise Increased Caution. That is due to the level of criminal activity and violence occurring throughout the state.
