Los Cabos Tourists Frustrated With Airport Conditions

Tourists are becoming increasingly unhappy when flying to Los Cabos due to what many have reported on social media, such as the lack of basic services and infrastructure available at the airport, which serves as one of the most popular travel destinations in the entire country.

What’s the Issue?

Los Cabos has been facing unprecedented demand for vacation getaways to the area.

According to official numbers from the airport’s publicly traded operator, Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico, nearly one million travelers used the airport in the first three months of this year.

That tourist count is set to well exceed the 3.8 million travelers that used their airport for their travel to the beach resort destination of Los Cabos in 2023.

According to travelers, the issue is that several aspects of the basic infrastructure needed by tourists at the airport have not been able to keep up with the substantial increase in passenger demand.

Air Conditioning Issues

Basic infrastructure needs are not meeting the needs of valued travelers to Los Cabos according to several reports on social media.

For example, arriving travelers complain about the hot and stuffy conditions inside the airport due to the lack of an adequately functioning air conditioning system in the airport.

Those waiting in long immigration lines to enter the country have claimed that they suffered from the heat related to being in an enclosed area with many people without adequate air circulation.

Several tourists have put the negative experience of having to wait hours in the heat at the hands of immigrations officials, due to the lack of staffing, in addition to the condition of the airport infrastructure.

Problems at Baggage Claim

When getting past the uncomfortable conditions in the immigration line to enter the country, travelers have struggled just to get their checked baggage.

Several of the conveyor belts used to return checked luggage to travelers have not been working recently, forcing tourists to wait and claim their luggage by hand on wheeled-in carts.

Poor Working Escalators

A final issue that has been brought up by a number of recent travelers to the beach resort destination of Los Cabos is the condition of the escalators.

Social media posts show that the escalators are in poor working order and could even be considered unsafe by several travelers.

Remodeling Underway

Unfortunately, some of the issues that tourists are experiencing upon arriving or leaving Los Cabos are due to the remodeling being done by airport operator Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico.

Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico is upgrading the facilities at Los Cabos International Airport to enhance the traveler experience and meet infrastructure needs.

However, travelers are being impacted by the remodeling and the lack of infrastructure available to support the current passenger numbers.

What Tourists Need to Know

Los Cabos International Airport Director Francisco Villaseñor Reyes reported last year that the operator of the airport is in the process of a more than $58 million ($995 million Mexican Pesos) renovation of the airport that is being done in phases.

International Terminal 2 is being expanded at the airport to accommodate more passengers, flights, and gates.

It will also add several much-requested amenities to the airport and infrastructure upgrades.

Terminal 1 also underwent several upgrades and additions. Travelers who use that terminal have noticed some differences, although they claim that they have not been enough to keep up with travelers’ basic needs.

Officials at Los Cabos International Airport appreciate the concern of travelers and have committed to taking immediate steps needed to provide a better experience for those heading to the beach resort destination on their vacation getaway.

Many travelers are bound for points north. There are zero international flights into La Paz, which is ridiculous and could alleviate some of the pressure on SJD.

They need to put in drinking fountains and stop charging $10 for a bottle of water! Starbucks is the only place that will fill a water bottle for you.

Totally agree! We fly Southwest from TX and the fact that you have to walk across the tarmac get on a bus for 2 minutes to the terminal is ridiculous. The baggage claim is the worst, so many people is one small area, then to run the gamut of the “solicitors” just to get to your car is an exhausting way to start a vacation.
