While there is plenty to do in and around Cabo, tourism officials are inviting Los Cabos tourists to explore the “Magical Town” of Todos Santos when visiting the area too. The small, laid-back town is only about 40 miles from Cabo San Lucas and about 57 miles from San Jose del Cabo, so it’s only a short drive from either popular tourist destination. The most recent available numbers show that Todos Santos already gets about 300,000 tourists every year, so it’s time to find out what is drawing so many visitors to this special town.
Initially founded in 1724, the Village of Todos Santos is an artist’s mecca and an architecture and history lover’s dream. Because the town is also on the Pacific coast, it is home to some beautiful beaches, and the backdrop of the Sierra de la Laguna mountains gives the scenery a dramatic look unique to the area. And since it is becoming more popular, there is no shortage of places to stay, with a number of hotels in the area and quite a few rental homes too.
Todos Santos Art Community
There are more than 10 different artist studios and art galleries in this town of about 6,500 people as of 2015. All different mediums of art are represented among the local galleries, and there is a mix of international artists and those that help share the stories and history of the area. Five of the most popular galleries in Todos Santos include:
- Gabo Art Gallery and Studio
- Galería de Todos Santos
- Galleria Indigo
- Galería Logan
- La Sonrisa de la Muerte

Todos Santos Architecture
Just as present as art in the community is a collection of historic architecture. The downtown area still maintains the colonial style on the outsides of the buildings that date back to the 1800s, so a walk down these streets will provide a historical perspective of the town. There is also a church in Todos Santos, Iglesia De Nuestra Senora Pilar, that is both a historical and an architectural landmark worth visiting.
Todos Santos Beaches
The beaches in Todos Santos each offer their own unique scenery. Not all of them are safe for swimming, though, and in fact, the high waves at some of the area’s beaches have made it a popular destination for surfers. The best beaches for swimming are Playa Los Cerritos and Playa Las Palmas. Others, like San Pedrito Beach, Playa La Pastora, and Las Pocitas, are better left for sunbathers and surfers.
Todos Santos History
In addition to exploring the history of Todos Santos through art and architecture, visitors can spend some time in the Museo de la Casa de Cultura. Here visitors can learn about the area’s history, heritage, and culture through visual and performing arts, dance, music, movies, and literature. The museum is open to the public at no cost seven days a week, from 8 am – 8 pm Monday through Friday and from 9 am – 5 pm Saturday and Sunday.
Visitors to Todos Santos will find a more laid-back, authentic town that was named a “Magical Town” because of its historical and cultural nature. The program to name such towns began more than 20 years ago and seeks to highlight the towns that have something unique or special to offer. Todos Santos is a little lesser-known village on the Baja peninsula that perfectly fits that description.
Todos Santos is only about an hour and 15 minutes from Los Cabos International Airport, so those that want to stay can easily get there by taxi or bus. Hotel San Cristobal, Villa Santa Cruz, Paradero Todos Santos, and Hotel California Todos Santos are just a few of the lodging options available. But for those that just want to visit, a drive to Todos Santos makes for a great day trip too.
