A recent report that rated a total of 75 Mexican cities, based on data from the National System of Statistical and Geographical Information, rated Los Cabos as the country’s 4th safest city.

The reason for the safety of the vacation destination is the effort that officials and authorities put towards maintaining security.

Now, Los Cabos is preparing to install more security cameras in tourist areas to keep visitors even more safe.

The New Plan To Improve Security

According to the Directorate of Public Security of Los Cabos, an expansion in video surveillance is set to take place in the near future.

The plan involves adding an additional 40 cameras to the current surveillance network.

The new surveillance cameras will be divided between popular tourist hotspots, other urban areas, and more remote locations to ensure security throughout Los Cabos.

When The Added Surveillance Can Be Expected

The head of Public Security, Jesus Gomez, discussed the timeframe for when the surveillance cameras will be installed and ready to use.

He commented that “It is being [installed] by the municipality for the C2; we have an estimate that in a month and a half, the expansion of the network will be completed, with which we will have more [security] presence through this technology….”

He further stated that they “also [will perform] maintenance of offline cameras so that there is more surveillance.”  Over 300 security cameras were installed earlier this year.

Los Cabos Tourist Hotspots With Added Security

There are three separate areas that you can stay in while in Los Cabos: San Jose del Cabo, the Tourist Corridor, which is the road that separates the two cities, and Cabo San Lucas.

Of all of them, Cabo San Lucas is where you’ll see the most security presence.

And tourist hotspots like Medano Beach, the downtown area, and the marina are where you’ll see them.

Additionally, cameras are likely utilized in these areas too, when possible.

Common Crimes In Los Cabos

The most common crimes Los Cabos tourists deal with are petty crimes like pickpocketing.

Although this particular crime has decreased by more than 50 percent over the last few years.

The other crime that’s common for tourists to be faced with is scams, specifically internet scams involving vacation rentals and tours.

What To Do If You See A Crime Take Place Or Are A Victim Of A Crime

Authorities urge tourists to report even the smallest crime, whether they’re a victim or a witness.

While security cameras help in being able to see the crime and locate the perpetrators, reporting crimes is the only surefire way to make sure that they are punished.

Tourists can report criminal acts to any municipal police officer they see or contact them by phone.

Protecting Yourself In Unknown Territory

All of the surveillance in the world can’t protect you from becoming a victim, but it can help law enforcement find the criminal.

It’s important to protect yourself when you’re in unknown territory to avoid becoming a victim of a crime too.

Be sure to stay in tourist areas, be cautious around strangers, and don’t get involved in illegal activities, and you can have a safe Los Cabos vacation.
