A vacation getaway to Los Cabos means much more than just sand, surf, and sun for many travelers to the beach resort destination.

More and more vacationers are starting to branch out from the city center of Los Cabos and explore the many unique cities that exhibit the special traditional lifestyle of the Baja California Sur region.

For many, that leads to at least a day trip to the capital of Baja California Sur – La Paz.

However, as La Paz continues to grow due to the popularity from tourism, tourists are now exploring small towns around the city. That’s led to a rapid acceleration of development of the towns south of La Paz to accommodate the needs of travelers.

This has led to tourists uncovering three authentic charming towns just a short day trip away from the urban hustle and bustle of Los Cabos – Los Barriles, El Sargento, and La Ventana.

Connecting to the Sea in Los Barrilles

Located about 40 miles north of Los Cabos and 65 miles south of La Paz, Los Barrilles is a small town of about 2000 people that will transport travelers back in time to traditional Baja California Sur.

Also known as the East Cape of Baja California Sur, the town provides visitors with a laid-back and relaxed beach experience.

The life in Los Barrilles is closely connected to the sea, with sportfishing, whale watching, and even whale shark adventures part of the many tourist attractions.

There are many hotel opportunities to stay and play in Los Barrilles, including the Hotel Palmas de Cortez, Agave Hotel & Cantina, and the Los Barrilles Hotel.

Embracing Nature in El Sargento

Travelers looking to connect with nature will find plenty of opportunities to relax and reflect in the serene coastal city located on Ventana Bay.

The traditional fishing and ranching town provides visitors with opportunities to learn more about the traditional lifestyle of the founders of Baja California Sur and their important sustainability connection to the land and the sea.

Less than an hour away, the town is far enough to get away from the capital of La Paz and enjoy the natural unspoiled white sand beaches of the Gulf of California coastline.

Breezes and History in La Ventana

La Ventana is probably one of the best-known destinations on the south coast of La Paz. This is especially the case with kitesurfers and windsurfers.

The natural landscape of La Ventana leads itself to a constant supply of breezes that drive the beach destination as one of the best locations in the area for wind-propelled water sports.

The town was founded back in the 1940s by a local pearl diver, and the close-knit community of 500 still boasts many of the relatives of this original founder.

The town has an amazing history that dates back more than 10,000 years to neolithic hunter-gatherers and even has an interesting connection to a landing by the conquistador Hernan Cortes.

New Adventures for Visitors

While not exactly an unknown part of the Baja California Sur coastline, the three towns of Los Barriles, El Sargento, and La Ventana provide visitors to Los Cabos with a unique opportunity to explore scenic beauty and traditional living, which has made the area a popular place to live.

In fact, as the area becomes better known and more often visited by travelers, the three towns are rapidly undergoing growth and development, including the construction of new resort hotels and an explosion in residential real estate.

Despite this growth, it is still early in the development stages, and travelers exploring these three towns can definitely enjoy the natural and sustainable beauty that creates vacation memories while exploring the areas around Los Cabos.
