As Los Cabos grows as a popular tourist destination, research is showing that they are coming to the resort destination location for two main reasons – preservation of the environment and experiences with nature.
Los Cabos is quickly emerging as a popular location for travel and tourism when it comes to environmental sustainability.
It is the beach resort destination in the world with the most blue flag-certified beaches. Blue flag-certified beaches are considered the most environmentally sustainable beaches in the world when it comes to not only cleanliness but also safety programs for visitors.
Los Cabos is also well known for its sustainable activities towards the preservation of sea animals such as endangered sea turtles and the conservation of natural reefs and national park areas. Divers and snorkelers come to visit Los Cabos to enjoy some great adventures in the waters around Los Cabos.
The environmental sustainability efforts come on two different fronts, one from the Baja California Sur state government and the other from the Los Cabos municipal government.
Both are focused on maintaining the environmental sustainability standards that attract tourists to visit Los Cabos.
Experiences With Nature
When it comes to experiences with nature, there are few better places to see and interact with nature than Los Cabos.
Right now, the sea turtle season is a popular attraction for tourists in Los Cabos. The nesting season is bringing several hundred sea turtles to the shores around Los Cabos to lay their eggs for the season.
As the hatchlings emerge, they scramble for the sea in order to start their own independent lives.
Tourists get to be part of the experience with the hatchlings by observing their emergence from the sand and scramble to the sea during the evening. They can also volunteer to assist the baby sea turtles with the process.
Los Cabos is also a very popular place for California Gray Whale watching.
The whale watching season in the region was particularly extraordinary this year, with the season extending into April for the first time in history. This was due to the potential El Nino weather pattern emerging in the Pacific Ocean.
During their annual migration, dozens of California Gray Whales breaching the water in order to breathe. This is a definite tourist favorite as visitors take to the ocean in whale-watching tour ships to enjoy the amazing natural wonder.
Other Popular Attractions
According to the Los Cabos Tourism Trust, there are a couple of other reasons why visitors choose the beach resort destination for their vacations. Following behind nature and environmental sustainability are gastronomy and culture.
Gastronomy, or “foodie” culture, has been a very important trend that the Los Cabos Tourism Trust has really tried to focus on to attract the more upscale luxury traveler.
They worked with local resorts and restaurants to put together special events such as Taste of Los Cabos, paella festivals, and even one dedicated to different types of seafood. There have also been special events for Tequila and mixed drinks.
The foodie traveler segment has grown significantly as Los Cabos works to reposition itself toward becoming more of a luxury resort destination for travelers.
Culture has always been an important focus of visitors to Los Cabos, yet it has not been part of the marketing focus of the community.
Culture could potentially move up in importance as the luxury segment expands its visitation to Los Cabos.
A large part of Mexican Americans are late in their careers and want to reconnect with their culture could become an important future traveler segment for visitors to Los Cabos.
Shifting Visitor Trends
It’s interesting to see the visitor segments popular with visitation in the past, such as beachgoers, fishing expeditions, and even party getaways not even making the list.
It shows how far Los Cabos has come in diversifying its visitor base towards more of a focus on the luxury visitor segment in such a short period of time.
