As the summer travel season gets busier and busier, travelers can expect beaches to be jam-packed. In a popular beach getaway like Cabo, it’s almost a guarantee.

Even with sky-high hotel rates averaging $600 per night, that doesn’t seem to be deterring tourists from making Cabo their destination of choice.

Staying in Cabo is awesome, but the downside of that is the secret is out. When top attractions become crowded, it can take away from the joy of vacationing.

Many pay so much money for a resort that they justify staying there the whole time. But many times, those types of travelers are doing themselves a disservice, especially in a place like Cabo.

When beaches become too crowded, there are still amazing places to check out. One hike in particular is the perfect place to escape the beach crowds this summer.

Cañon de la Zorra (Fox Canyon)

Located approximately 90 minutes north of Cabo San Lucas is a truly stunning hike to a picturesque waterfall.

The drive along the scenic roads of Cabo is worth it in itself, but the hike is even better! Those who want to spend time outdoors and escape the beach crowds will discover an off-the-beaten-path oasis.

It’s a far cry from Cabo’s reputation as a beach destination and party scene. Here, visitors will be in the middle of the desert, surrounded by lush vegetation and rocky canyons.

Once visitors arrive at Rancho Sol de Mayo, it’s best to be prepared for a long day. But it’s all worth it in the end when you reach a beautiful 39-foot waterfall towering over a swimming hole perfect for a summer day.

Those adventurous enough to give it a chance have not been disappointed. Fox Canyon holds a steady 4.8 stars out of 5 on Google out of 500 total reviews.

Some choose to book an official tour where you can rest your feet and take an all-terrain vehicle instead.

Many say it is one of the best places in Mexico to watch the sunrise for those willing to get out of their cushy resort bed and head to the desert.

Others say it is simply worth it to experience some quiet time in nature in a serene backdrop of an awesome waterfall and scenic canyons.

How To Get Here

Some resorts offer tours with transportation included to reach the Cañon. But many choose to rent a car and make a mini road trip out of their day instead of a guided excursion.

Travelers will want to head north on Mexico 1 toward the gorgeous city of La Paz. When you reach the beautiful town of Miraflores, there will be an exit to an unpaved road.

This can at times be in poor condition, so it’s important to be aware of this in advance. A 4×4 vehicle should handle the aftermath of bad weather with no issues.

Safety Concerns

Once a famed attraction in Cabo, it has been re-opened for less than a year. A tragic accident occurred in August 2022, leaving a tourist with a severed limb due to a rare rockfall.

This caused a temporary closure to visitors. Months later, after careful assessment, the area was open for tourism again.

At the time, The Undersecretary of Civil Protection for Baja California Sur, Benjamín García Meza said,

“The incident in August was also caused by heavy rainfall, which unfortunately caused a large rock to fall from the cliff and split in two, which led to the person’s injury”.

Although deemed safe today, it is highly advised to be careful of your whereabouts when out and about enjoying the sights and sounds of nature.

It’s advised to be extra careful on rainy days since that is when the rockfall occured. August is right around the corner, and everyone would hate for there to be another unnecessary tragedy.

It is also highly recommended to pack plenty of water, food, sunblock, and insect repellent, dependent on the weather conditions.
