With over 25-blue-certified beaches, Los Cabos is to this day, the Northern American place with the highest number of plays certified to this high international standard. 

Despite this, the nearby municipality of La Paz is now also growing a reputation as one of the best areas in Baja California Sur for those wanting to spend their holidays on the beach.

With places such as Balandra Beach, which was recently ranked the 12th best in the world by users of the popular platform TripAdvisor, this municipality has its own hidden gems to explore. 

But what are some of the best places in La Paz according to tourists? 

El Tecolote Beach

El Tecolote Beach is the ideal option for those who don’t want to drive too far, as you can easily reach this place with a quick 40-minute drive from the center of La Paz. 

On top of this, you can also opt for local transportation. People heading here will find buses departing from the Malecon Touristic Bus Terminal to this beach every couple of hours. The price for a ticket is now less than 100 Mexican Pesos, roughly $6.

This playa faces an island known as Espiritu Santo and is famous for the unspoiled nature found here.

Once you arrive at this beach, you can choose from a wide variety of activities, as plenty of water sports rental shops are nearby.

For instance, you can rent a kayak, a paddleboard, and even a jet ski!

Other popular water sports in the area include water skiing, parasailing, and windsurfing. Here, tourists can also purchase a scuba diving tour or take a boat trip to the nearby Espiritu Santo island.

Last but not least, it’s important to remember that tourists can spend their entire day here, thanks to the few restaurants located on the shore and offering delicious local dishes. 

Treasure Beach

Next on our list is Treasure Beach. This breathtaking stretch of land is located at about a 20-minute drive from La Paz.

Services here are quite basic, but you will find a a palapa rental to protect yourself from the strong sun as well as a few drink stands to get a refreshing beverage to reenergize your body after a long swim. 

Unfortunately, food options are very limited, meaning that tourists hoping to spend the day here should carry their food with them, making sure to avoid leaving garbage behind.

Treasure Beach, locally known as Playa El Tesoro, also offers plenty of activities to visitors, from hikes on one of the many routes surrounding this place to snorkeling adventures.

Tourists without a car will be able to reach this beach with the so-called Playa Bus for a reasonable price. 

Keep in mind that approximately four buses leave every day from La Paz to reach this destination, so people opting for this transportation option should ask for the departure times to avoid wasting time at the station. 

Punta Arena Beach

Easily reachable with a one-hour drive from La Paz, Punta Arena Beach is the ideal place to escape the crowds typical of Baj California Sur. 

This unspoiled stretch of land faces Cerralvo Island, giving tourists the best opportunity to take a fabulous picture of this marvelous island. 

Several people come here to camp for the night and get the most out of Baja California Sur’s unspoiled nature. However, those thinking of doing so should keep in mind that there is no service for tourists here.

Visitors should also opt for a 4×4 to reach this destination, as the road leading to this little paradise is not asphalted. 

People on Tripadvisor seem to particularly like this location, with one reviewer saying: “[Punta Arena Beach] is far enough from surrounding cities, allowing you a day of peace and tranquil exploration of an amazing beach. It is pristine with clear translucid waters surrounded by rocks. There is a reef on the right corner making it a great place to snorkel.”
