The annual Fiestas Tradicionales celebration is coming to Los Cabos starting on March 16, and local officials are getting ready by putting security plans in place now to keep tourists and locals safe at the event.
The Fiestas Tradicionales Celebration in Los Cabos
The Fiestas Tradicionales in Los Cabos is an annual celebration in March in honor of the patron saint of the community, San José. This year, it takes place from March 16 to 20. It is much like a traditional county fair or local carnival in the United States.
There are a wide variety of events planned for the Los Cabos Fiestas Tradicionales, including art displays, cultural events, a livestock show, fun carnival games for the family, and even some top musical acts.
Headlining the music is the Mexican favorite Banda El Recodo on March 16. They are one of the top classic bands in Mexico playing regional banda style music, which often features tenor horns, clarinets, and trombones, among other instruments.
Another headlining band is Los Tigres del Norte on March 19, which is the only Mexican band to be honored with 12 Latin Grammys along with six Grammy awards.
Security Plans for the Event
While there have been no credible threats made against the event, in the spirit of proactiveness, Mayor Oscar Leggs Castro’s team has already designed a comprehensive security strategy plan for the event.
The Directorate of Public Security, Preventative Police and Municipal Traffic of Los Cabos Jesus Antonio Gomez Rodriguez has been put in charge of security at the event. He has pledged to use the entire resources of the community to ensure the safety and security of visitors.

Some of the initial planning has security planning calls for metal detectors and screenings at event entrances as well as the addition of mobile monitoring watchtowers to visually ensure safety. Gomez Rodriguez also mentioned that all activity at the event will be recorded for the protection of tourists and locals alike.
Additional announced security measures planned for the Los Cabos Fiestas Tradicionales include perimeter security enforcement, regular patrols, and police monitoring areas where there will be large groups of people.
There are also a number of other undercover security measures being planned that were not disclosed for the protection of the entire operations plan.
Gomez Rodriguez stressed that all three levels of government – local, regional and federal, are working together to ensure a safe and successful event for the community.
He invited locals and tourists to have fun enjoying themselves at another safe and successful Los Cabos Fiestas Tradicionales this year.
Importance of Tourist Safety in Los Cabos
Security of visitors, especially those from the United States, has become more of an issue in Mexico after the recent widely covered abduction and killing of medical tourists near Matamoros.
United States government officials are calling for the Mexican government to do more to protect visitors to the country, especially in light of the current peak spring travel season.
The security of visitors in Los Cabos has always been a priority for Mayor Oscar Leggs Castro and his administration because of the importance of the tourism industry in the Los Cabos economy.
In fact, recently, the Los Cabos local government has been working to install additional security cameras to monitor high-traffic tourist shopping, dining, and beach areas.
They have also stepped up the response training of the police department, reinforced health and safety procedures at local pharmacies, and even worked to install additional protective outdoor lighting at plazas to help Los Cabos tourists feel even safer.
The economy in Los Cabos is fueled by tourist traffic, and any incident could cause a negative perception of Los Cabos and a significant drop in tourism and resulting income to the community. Because of this local focus, Los Cabos is generally regarded as a safe destination to visit in Mexico.
