Security in Los Cabos is a subject that is constantly being discussed because the tourist destination is so popular among foreign travelers, particularly those from the U.S. and Canada. Throughout the year, millions of tourists make the trip to enjoy the beautiful beaches, fantastic weather, and endless activities, and spring is one of the busiest seasons.
To prepare and provide added protection, security in Los Cabos is being ramped up in busy tourist areas with the start of the spring season.
Tourists Expected In Los Cabos This Spring
During the spring months of March and April, Los Cabos is popular among both college-aged spring breakers and families. In addition, winter travelers escaping the cold are still traveling to Los Cabos as well, so a huge influx of tourists is expected over the next couple of months. According to Leticia Rivera Leggs, Municipal Director of Civil Protection, as many as 45,000 tourists are expected in Los Cabos just between March 5 and April 8, 2023.

Where In Los Cabos Is Everyone Going?
Los Cabos is the name used to refer to a vacation destination that is actually made up of two different cities, which include San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas.
Both are very popular destinations, but Cabo San Lucas tends to be the more popular of the two with the spring break crowd due to the vibrant nightlife scene and access to more activities. This is the area expected to be the busiest and where the biggest concentration of additional security will be.

How Los Cabos Handles Security
Security in Los Cabos is provided by multiple units, including the police, the Army, and the National Guard. It is not uncommon to see police and military officers walking up and down the beaches, monitoring the marina area, and patrolling the streets of downtown near the bars, restaurants, and clubs.
Sometimes hundreds of military officers are deployed to the area, usually during busy times like the spring season.

Los Cabos Safety
Over the past year, a number of studies and reports have shown that Los Cabos is a safe vacation destination to visit. The rankings of the safest cities in Mexico, presented by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) last year, showed that Los Cabos was the 3rd safest city in the country. These rankings are based on the perception of security of both locals and tourists.
If Los Cabos Is So Safe, Why All The Security?
There is no hiding the fact that there is crime in Los Cabos, just like anywhere else in the world, especially tourist destinations. And during times when there is a massive influx of tourists, you may see a corresponding uptick in crime because certain criminals, like pickpockets, may target tourists. The increased security helps to keep these criminals out of the tourist areas.
Between now and April 8th, the Municipal Directorate of Civil Protection will be deploying personnel to perform patrols through the streets, on beaches, and in popular recreation areas. The operation will be a collaboration between the department and the General Directorate of Public Security, Preventive Police, and Municipal Traffic. Emergency units will also be prepared and concentrated near the nightclub area.
According to officials, after April 8th, they will begin addressing the security needs for the next busy season that will take place shortly after the spring break rush. This attention to security is exactly why Los Cabos is seen as one of the safest vacation destinations in Mexico.
