Los Cabos is once again taking proactive steps to keep tourists safe when visiting the popular beach destination.

The latest development is the addition of more video surveillance cameras to the 20 already installed to keep visitors safe at the popular El Medano beach. Additionally, the cameras will now be integrated with the Los Cabos Public Safety Department’s more than 200 cameras for enhanced security.

World-Famous El Medano Beach

El Medano Beach

El Medano beach, also known as Playa El Medano by the locals, is considered the heart of tourist activity in Los Cabos. Surrounded by a number of popular high-rise resort hotels and popular restaurants, the beach especially becomes the focal point of the annual Spring Break festivities.

The longest swimmable beach in Los Cabos, running all the way from the Villa del Palmar to the east side of the harbor entrance, is always full of tourists from around the world.

The popular beach is directly across from the world-famous Los Cabos Arch and is well known for its calmer waves, warm waters, and plenty of soft sands. Snorkelers will also find El Medano a perfect place to enjoy watching sea creatures.

For those seeking water sports fun, El Medano offers a number of popular activities, from kayaking and jet ski riding to wave running and even surfing.

On the more relaxing side, dining options are available all over the beach, with a number of palapa-style eateries offering beachside dining with plenty of dramatic ocean views.

Meanwhile, while El Medano is not necessarily considered the best shopping location in Los Cabos, it also does offer a number of souvenir shops that tourists can enjoy to remember their vacation visit.

El Medano beach also is busy with a number of vendors walking up and down the beach offering snacks, beach products, and even bead jewelry to guests. This has led to some recent security issues on the beach and led the municipality to help educate beach shoppers about how to select a properly licensed vendor.

Increasing Tourist Safety

Work is currently underway to increase the actual number of surveillance cameras at El Medano beach to ensure the safety of visiting tourists.

There are currently 20 cameras positioned around El Medano to provide security for visitors. The plans are to increase the number of cameras to provide the widest coverage and safety possible at the important focal hub of tourism.

Additionally, the surveillance cameras and their feeds will now be centrally monitored by the Los Cabos Public Service Department. In the past, the Medano Businessmen’s Association was responsible for deploying the cameras and monitoring the feed. The hope is that the central location will prevent issues at the popular beach and lead to a faster police response when needed.

The El Medano beach camera network will be added to the current 200 municipal police-controlled cameras stationed around Los Cabos that are constantly being monitored by the Los Cabos Control and Monitoring Center. The mission of the center is to monitor and safeguard the safety of not only tourists in Los Cabos but the local residents as well.

It also focuses the monitoring on the state and municipal government officials with the objective of eliminating any possible harassment of tourists by the beach vendors and the traffic of illegal substances at the beach.

Police Talking To Tourists

The Medano Businessmen’s Association is currently in the process of transferring the cameras to the Los Cabos City Council for use by the municipal police monitoring center.

What it Means For Visitors

With the new cameras, central monitoring by the local public service department, and quicker response by the local police, beachgoers at El Medano should feel more peace of mind when enjoying themselves at the beach.

It also enables the local community to provide a more comfortable and enjoyable vacation experience at El Medano beach for tourists to Los Cabos.
