La Paz is the capital city of Baja California Sur, the same Mexican state that is home to Los Cabos, but it offers quite a different experience than the popular vacation destination that sits about two hours to the south of the city. Although it doesn’t get as many visitors as Los Cabos and doesn’t have as many luxury all-inclusive resorts, it is growing in popularity, and more brand-name hotels are starting to pop up in La Paz. Now, a new Fairmont Resort will be coming to La Paz next year as well.
Fairmont Hotels and Resorts have been in the hospitality game for more than 100 years, and now they are bringing that same level of luxury and service to the Baja Peninsula. Puerta Cortés, the resort community where the La Paz Fairmont La Paz Puerta Cortés Resort and Residences is being built, sits on more than 500 acres of coastal environmentally protected land. Guests at Fairmont will have access to the community’s signature Gary Player golf course, El Cortés Golf Club, and a marina located within the community.
The resort itself will feature 155 rooms, 24 suites, and 61 residences ranging from one to four bedrooms, each residence with its own private plunge pool. The property will have four different food and beverage options, a number of which will be located beachfront with views of the Sea of Cortez. There will also be separate clubs for children and young adults that will provide a range of activities to keep them busy.

The Fairmont La Paz will also have over 13,000 square feet of meeting and event space. The property will have three pools, in addition to private plunge pools that will be in select resort units. Fitness facilities and a luxurious spa will be located in a “wellness village” that will be available to guests as well.
The Fairmont La Paz Puerta Cortés Resort and Residences is one of the first luxury brands to develop in La Paz. And although it surely won’t be the last, it marks a significant milestone for the Accor Fairmont Hotels & Resorts brand. CEO of Accor North & Central America, Heather McCrory, said as much when she commented on the opening, stating that “Fairmont La Paz Puerta Cortés marks a significant milestone in Accor’s growth in Mexico and will be an exceptional addition to Accor’s luxury portfolio as the group continues to expand its presence in North America.”
The development of the luxury property marks a turning point for La Paz, too, as it begins its journey as the next up-and-coming Mexican vacation destination. Ms. McCrory points out that “Fairmont has a rich legacy dating back more than 100 years, welcoming travelers to iconic destinations around the world and celebrating meaningful connections to the local cultures and communities in which our hotels reside.” She further stated that the “Fairmont La Paz Puerta Cortés will continue this tradition as we develop an experience that immerses travelers in the natural beauty and rich heritage of La Paz.”
La Paz is a more laid-back town than other popular destinations in Baja California Sur, like Cabo San Lucas, with more of a port town atmosphere. It exudes charm and authenticity and takes pride in its artistic community and dedication to preserving the natural environment of the area. Many of the activities in the area revolve around these important aspects of the La Paz culture.
Although the resort is slated to open in 2023, there is no set opening date yet, but we’ll be sure to provide an update when a date is determined.
