Once again, the state of Baja California Sur topped itself, setting a new tourism record.

Fernando Ojedo Aguilar, Undersecretary of Tourism in Baja California Sur, claimed that this destination has experienced a growth of passengers by air equal to 11% compared to 2022.

According to him, last year a total of 4.1 passengers arrived in this Mexican state by air, while experts now believe that this destination will end 2023 with 4.5 arrivals.

Commenting on these positive numbers, Fernando Ojedo Aguilar stated: “This is a great achievement (and) a great challenge at a time when (…) there is more competition. Closing with good numbers is the most important thing (…). We are very happy.”

But why are so many people flocking to this destination?

Sports and culinary events

According to Fernando Ojedo Aguilar, one of the main reasons why so many tourists decide to head to this Mexican state every year is to join in the many culinary and sports events taking place here.

For instance, the historic Baja 1000, an annual Mexican off-road motorsport race that for the first time this year began in La Paz.

Other popular sports in the area include fishing and golf, which attract thousands of tourists from all over the world every year.

On top of this, the municipality of Los Cabos is renowned for sports events such as the Ironman Los Cabos, held every March, and the Los Cabos Open of Surf, organized in June.

The same can be said for culinary events. Not by chance, this municipality is home to Sabor a Cabo, a food and wine festival that takes place in December.

Los Cabos is particularly renowned for its many fine-dining restaurants and this year experts from the Michelin Guide decided to visit this unique place to see whether any of its eateries deserve a Michelin star.

Nature and luxury accommodations

Of course, the many events organized in Baja California Sur are just one of the many reasons leading so many visitors to choose this destination for their holidays.

This area is also renowned for its stunning natural landscapes and mind-blowing all-inclusive resorts

Let’s start with the first one. From the Los Cabos arch to the Sierra de la Laguna Biosphere Reserve, and Cabo Pulmo National Park, tourists here can fully immerse themselves in the most unspoiled Mexican nature.

This is also the ideal place for animal lovers who will be able to spot humpback whales chilling in their natural habitat, swim with whale sharks in the Sea of Cortez, or do some bird watching in the San José Estuary.

When it comes to luxurious accommodations, the options are endless. Not by chance, Forbes has recently published a list of the best hotels in the area, featuring properties such as Montage Los Cabos, The Cape, and Las Ventanas.

Connectivity and safety

Lastly, Baja California Sur, and Los Cabos in particular, are not only extremely well-connected with the rest of the world but also very safe.

With airlines constantly adding new routes to the main airports in this state, visitors departing from the USA will find direct flights from plenty of American cities.

For instance, just a few days ago, the famous airline Alaska Air launched a new flight to this destination departing from Las Vegas.

In terms of safety, plenty of reports keep confirming Los Cabos as one of the safest municipalities in Mexico.

This is because the local government has made it its priority to keep increasing its safety levels day after day to ensure tourists continue to arrive.

Plenty of initiatives to protect tourists and locals alike are being discussed daily, with new operations put in place on a weekly basis.

For instance, a few days ago, the local authorities launched the so-called Lifeguard Safety Operation. Starting on December 16th and ending on January 7th, thanks to this new initiative 300 naval guards have been given the task of patrolling Los Cabos’ main beaches to ensure the safety of all tourists.
