You’ve got the flights booked, the resort picked out, and you can already picture the sunset over Land’s End.
But none of that matters if you get turned away at the airline counter because of a passport technicality…or you get hit with a surprise “wait, I was supposed to pay THAT?” moment on the way home.
Here at The Cabo Sun, we see the same panic play out all the time. Travelers land at Los Cabos International Airport (SJD) expecting a smooth arrival, only to realize they didn’t understand the new digital entry process, they’re missing proof for a required fee, or they packed something that Mexican customs will absolutely not smile about.

So we built this to be simple: no jargon, no fluff, just the steps that actually matter for getting into Los Cabos in 2026 and leaving without drama.

The Passport “Six-Month” Reality
Mexico’s rule is straightforward: your passport needs to be valid for the duration of your trip. But airlines can be stricter, and they’re the ones who decide whether you board.
The Mexican Embassy itself even tells travelers to check with their airline because six-month policies can still trip you up at check-in.
Our advice is the same one we’ve given in our Cabo entry requirements guide: if you’re inside that six-month window, renewing is the safest move.

The Digital Entry Process At SJD (Stamp or QR Receipt)
The paper tourist card days are fading fast. U.S. State Department guidance explains that Mexico issues a digital entry record (FMMD) at all international airports, and depending on your arrival flow you may get a passport stamp, or you may be routed through an E-Gate that prints a receipt with a QR code.
At SJD specifically, we’ve seen the system running in real life, including automated options that can speed up arrivals.
Pro tip: Whatever you receive (stamp or printed receipt), treat it like gold. Screenshot it. Keep it handy. It’s your proof of legal entry. Also, if you use the e-gates, you will automatically get 6 months’ worth of time to stay in Mexico.

Length Of Stay: The Big “Quiet” Change
For years, many travelers expected a default long stay. That’s not something you should assume anymore.
As we covered previously, your authorized stay can be determined by the immigration officer, and it’s smart to have your return flight and lodging details ready, especially if you’re staying longer than a typical week. (If you’re a standard vacation traveler with a round-trip itinerary, this usually goes smoothly.)
However, if you are able to use the automatic e-gates, the receipt that you get will automatically give you 6 months of time to stay in Mexico.

Don’t Forget The Embrace It Tax (Yes, It’s Separate)
This is the one people miss, because it’s not bundled into your flight or hotel bill.
Local authorities have confirmed the “Embrace It” tourist contribution remains in effect for 2026, and the official portal states international visitors are required to pay 470 MXN (about $25 USD depending on exchange rate) and that it’s paid online.
Scam warning: only use the official state portal: embraceit.bcs.gob.mx. Save the QR code receipt (screenshot + email).

Customs: The “Red Light” Surprise And The Stuff That Gets Confiscated
Mexico’s customs rules are not “vacation relaxed.” If you get selected for inspection, they’ll be looking for specific categories.
Two big ones to underline:
- Vapes/e-cigarettes: Mexican customs authorities explicitly list e-cigarettes and personal vaporizers as items you can’t bring in.
- Cash over $10,000 USD: It’s not illegal to carry, but it is illegal not to declare. Mexico’s customs agency explains the requirement and consequences clearly.
And if you’re doing duty-free, Mexico’s customs authority spells out the personal allowance limits (including cigarettes and alcohol).

The Bottom Line
Los Cabos is absolutely set up for a smooth 2026 arrival. The process is faster and more digital than it used to be, but only if you handle the few “gotcha” items first: passport validity, proof of entry, your length-of-stay plan, the Embrace It tax, and customs basics.
