Tourists heading to Los Cabos often expect to find luxurious all-inclusive resorts and breathtaking beaches with top-notch services for bathers.

Noy by chance, in recent years, Los Cabos has become synonymous with opulent holidays, with celebrities such as Christian Bale, Justin Bieber, and Britney Spears choosing this Mexican municipality for their vacations.

Surely, visitors spending thousands of dollars on a holiday in this destination do not expect to find streets filled up with trash and beaches flooded with garbage.

Unfortunately, however, this has recently become one of the tourists’ main concerns when visiting Los Cabos, together with the poor mobility of this municipality. Luckily, the local government is now addressing this issue.

A new cleaning initiative

Trash on the street

Personnel from the General Directorate of Public Services in Los Cabos decided to invest money in a new initiative aiming at cleaning the local streets.

Cleaning operations mainly focused on the El Zacatal neighborhoods in San José del Cabo as well as in the El Caribe area in Cabo San Lucas.

Employees of the Operation and Maintenance Directorate and the Cleaning Directorate of the Los Cabos municipality carried these out.

This implies that tourists heading to this area soon will probably find better conditions compared to those faced by past travelers and will be able to walk through Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo’s streets without having to dodge trash on their path and be able to take nice pictures of the many picturesque houses typical of these cities.

Tourists’ main concerns

According to recent exit surveys, Los Cabos tourists tend to be dissatisfied with the level of cleanliness of the municipality.

Commenting on this data, the President of the Board of Directors of the Los Cabos Hotel Association, Mauricio Salicrup, said: “The issue of cleanliness is already a problem.”

He later added: “Both national and international [travelers] are leaving comments that the city is very dirty. That is a reality; it is in the survey. We have to work with it.”

Apart from the trash found on the street, visitors heading to Los Cabos also seem to be concerned about the poor condition of the municipality’s roads.

Unfortunately, 2023 saw a drastic increase in the number of car crashes in this area, with over one injured person caused by road accidents per day.

The local government is now trying to improve the situation with several initiatives. For instance, just a few days ago, it was announced that more road patrols would be added to Los Cabos.

On top of this, last year, local authorities decided to decrease the speed limit on the Transpeninsular Highway, one of Los Cabos’ busiest streets, from 90 km/h to 60 km/h in an attempt to reduce the number of car crashes taking place here daily.

Why do tourists keep choosing Los Cabos?

In light of these two major issues, people may now be wondering why so many people continue to choose Los Cabos for their holidays.

The truth is that these are only minor problems and don’t have such a huge impact on most Los Cabos vacations.

Thousands of American tourists return to this Mexican municipality year after year thanks to the many luxury resorts found here.

From the Grand Velas Los Cabos to the Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal, which earned first and second place in the recently published US News 2024 Best Hotel Mexico List, Los Cabos is home to some of the best properties in the whole of Mexico where tourists can find state-of-the-art amenities such as fitness centers, holistic spas, and elegant suites with ocean views.
