Los Cabos Airport Is The Third Busiest In Mexico As Destination Grows In Popularity

More than 16 million international tourists have already visited Mexico this year, just between the months of January and September.

Nearly 2 million of those international tourists visited Los Cabos, making it the third busiest airport for international tourist arrivals in the country.

There are a few things that travelers need to know about arriving at and departing from Los Cabos Airport as the destination grows in popularity and the airport becomes busier than ever.

Immigration

When you arrive in Los Cabos, the first thing you will have to do is present your passport.

You’ll then be asked a few questions before you can move forward with your entry into the country.

Upon completion, you will be able to gather your luggage and meet up with your transportation driver.

Customs

After presenting your passport to a customs agent, your luggage will be checked for forbidden items before you’re allowed to move forward.

Firearms and ammunition are both illegal to carry into Mexico, as are illegal substances, including cannabis products, even if you have a prescription.

Additionally, certain over-the-counter medications, like some allergy medications, sinus medicines, and inhalers are forbidden.

Travelers with prescription medications should carry a copy of the prescription as well.

Transportation

How you’ll get to and from Los Cabos Airport at the beginning and end of your visit is one of the most important things to consider when planning your trip.

Just like in any other vacation destination, there will be taxis lined up outside the airport, but they can charge as much as $80 one way to get to Cabo San Lucas.

Ubers are not allowed to pick up at the airport, so your only other options are public or private transportation.

Private transportation is ideal because it often costs less than a taxi and you can book in advance.

Once you exit from immigration at the airport, you’ll be directed to the taxi stations to purchase a one way ticket to your hotel with a shared shuttle. I prepaid for my ride online ($18) and presented my confirmation email. It was well organized and I was promptly met by the next available driver that led me to the shuttle. The shuttle van was clean, safe and modern. I consider this the scenic option, because depending on the location of your hotel and number of stops, it does take a bit longer than hiring a private transfer. Nevertheless, I had nowhere else to be and enjoyed the views along the way. How do you feel about riding around with strangers? The Shark Tank

One of the benefits of booking tour transportation in advance is you can get off the plane and barrel right through the “Shark Tank” to where your driver will be waiting.

The “Shark Tank” is an area in Los Cabos Airport that you’ll walk through as you head outside of the airport.

It’s filled with timeshare salespeople who will tell outright lies to try to get you into a car to take you to a sales presentation.

Often they will even try to convince you that they are transportation providers to trick you into their vehicles.

When To Get To Los Cabos Airport For Your Return Flight

When it comes time to depart from Los Cabos Airport you’ll want to arrive about three hours before your scheduled departure.

This gives you time to get through customs and immigration and check your bags.

You’ll want to make sure you have your passport ready so as not to slow down the process of getting checked in.

What To Do While Waiting For Departure

While getting to the airport three hours in advance of your departure time may not be ideal, there is plenty to keep you busy while you’re waiting.

There are a number of both quick and sit-down restaurants located inside each terminal and duty-free shops to pick up some souvenirs.

There are also airport lounges that cost about $40 for entry unless you have a credit card that offers free entry.

Los Cabos Airport In Comparison

Los Cabos Airport only fell behind Cancun and Mexico City, which received the most international tourists, respectively, during the period of January through September.

Compared to the same period last year, tourism in Los Cabos increased by more than 7 percent.

The U.S. is Los Cabos’ largest international market.
