Every Los Cabos fan knows the most popular beaches in the municipality. Lovers Beach, Chileno Beach, El Medano Beach… the list goes on and on.
But there are a few hidden gems scattered all over Los Cabos that still need to be discovered by most visitors.
Today we are going to introduce you to one of these, El Surgidero Beach. Located about 47 miles north of San José del Cabo, this place is a must-visit for all tourists.
But why should people head there right now? Here are four reasons why now is the best time to visit El Surgidero Beach.
Now cleaner than ever
El Surgidero Beach has recently been cleaned by a group of volunteers led by the Municipal Coordination of the Federal Maritime-Terrestrial Zone of Los Cabos and the Costa Palma Foundation.
Those who participated in the initiative managed to collect a total of 12 tons of waste, including 500 kg of plastic.
About 135 people participated in the project and cleaned an impressive area equal to over 1,200 meters of shore. Most of the waste was brought to the beach by Hurricane Norma, which recently hit the coasts of Baja California Sur.
Thankfully, the Los Cabos municipality immediately began the cleaning operations. Talking about these the delegate Raymundo Zamora Ceseña affirmed: “We have made an approximate progress of 60%, you could say (…) we continue working and operating in different parts of Cabo San Lucas, mainly through the citizen participation committees.”
Escape the winter crowds
Of course, another main reason to visit El Surgidero Beach is that compared to the most popular beaches close to San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas, this area tends to have way fewer tourists.
As the high season finally arrived in Los Cabos, more and more visitors suddenly felt the need to escape the winter crowds to get some well-deserved privacy.
Due to its distance from the two largest and most popular cities in Los Cabos, El Surgidero Beach is the ideal place to spend your day in complete tranquility.
Certified blue flag
It’s important to remember that fewer people don’t necessarily mean worse beach conditions. Not by chance, El Surgidero Beach is one of the many blue-flag certified beaches in the Los Cabos municipality.
This certification is given to the cleanest beaches in the world, featuring the best facilities and providing the highest level of safety for its bathers.
El Surgidero Beach is often very safe, and swimming here is rarely dangerous, allowing tourists to dive in the water most of the time unless black or red flags are found on the sand.
Great nearby attractions
Last but not least, El Surgidero Beach has a great location as it’s situated roughly 18 km north of Cabo Pulmo National Park.
This area was officially designated a national park in 1995, and in 2005 it joined the UNESCO list! But this is not all. A few years later, in 2008, Cabo Pulmo National Park was also recognized as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance.
People here can enjoy water activities such as snorkeling with the many sea lions inhabiting the area, or try to spot one of the many terrestrial animals living in the park.
Alternatively, those not interested in Cabo Pulmo can head to the little town of Los Barriles. Located roughly 10 km north of El Surgidero Beach, this small community will give visitors a true insight into the authentic Mexican lifestyle.
With a population of slightly over 1,500 people, there is no better place to embrace the slow pace of living of the locals inhabiting Baja California Sur.
This town is known for being Baja’s kitesurfing and windsurfing capital but visitors heading here can also enjoy other activities ranging from horseback riding to off-roading with ATV.
Los Barriles is also a famous fishing destination with roosterfish, jackfish, mahi mahi, swordfish, and yellowfin tuna, among some of the stunning fishes that can be found here.
