If it feels like everyone is suddenly going to Cabo, you’re not imagining it.
New data highlighted by Mexican outlet El Cronista confirms that Los Cabos has now consolidated its place as Mexico’s third most-visited destination for international tourists, behind only Mexico City and Cancun. Even better? Those visitors are staying longer and spending more than the national average.
We at The Cabo Sun have been tracking this rise for years. Back in 2023, Los Cabos closed the year in the #3 spot with nearly 4 million air arrivals and double-digit growth in visitors. Now the latest numbers show Cabo isn’t just holding that spot—it’s strengthening it.
So what’s driving the boom? Here are five big reasons Los Cabos has climbed into Mexico’s top three.

1. Cabo Focuses On “Quality Over Quantity”
According to Los Cabos Tourism Trust director Rodrigo Esponda, the strategy isn’t about chasing as many tourists as possible—it’s about attracting travelers who stay longer and invest more in the destination.
International arrivals are up around 1% this year, but the average stay has stretched to about 6.1 days, and visitors are dropping roughly 45,000 pesos per trip, about twice the national average for foreign tourists in Mexico.
That “quality over quantity” approach explains why Cabo can be smaller than places like Guadalajara or Monterrey and still outrank them in international tourism. Guests aren’t just flying in, hitting an all-inclusive, and flying out—they’re building full itineraries around beaches, dining, wellness, fishing, golf, and exploring beyond the resort.
We’ve seen this shift coming ever since Los Cabos first officially claimed the #3 spot, something we broke down in detail when the destination closed out 2023 with record international arrivals.
2. A Luxury Resort Scene That Keeps Leveling Up
If you feel like every week there’s a new “wow” resort announcement, you’re not wrong. As we recently reported, Los Cabos already has around 21,700 rooms across 185 properties, and at least nine new high-end resorts are scheduled to open between now and 2030, adding roughly 1,000 more luxury-leaning rooms.
That’s on top of showpieces like Grand Velas Los Cabos—with its included Michelin-starred dining—and the Four Seasons’ new private yacht experience that turns the bay into an extension of the resort. Add in the fact that expert rankings recently named two Los Cabos properties among the best all-inclusive resorts in Mexico, and it’s easy to see why high-spend travelers keep choosing Cabo for that “once-in-a-lifetime” feel.
We unpacked this resort arms race in our guide to the nine new high-end resorts arriving by 2030, which is basically a cheat sheet to where Cabo’s luxury scene is headed next.

3. World-Class Beaches And Nature Experiences
Cabo’s beaches aren’t just pretty—they’re certified.
Los Cabos now boasts 27 internationally recognized Blue Flag beaches, the highest tally in Mexico, signaling strong standards for water quality, safety, and environmental management. On top of that, 22 local beaches have just earned Platinum Beach status, confirming that many of the spots you’re likely to visit—like Médano, Chileno, and Santa María—are among the best-managed in the country.
For travelers, that means cleaner sand, better lifeguard coverage, and more confidence getting in the water. We dug into what those labels actually mean in our deep dives on Cabo’s Blue Flag and Platinum beach awards, which are must-reads if you’re planning a beach-hopping trip.
And it doesn’t stop at the shoreline. In our guide to must-do Los Cabos excursions, we show how you can layer in Arch cruises, whale watching, snorkeling, desert UTV rides, and foodie nights in San José del Cabo to build a week that genuinely uses all six of those vacation days—without spending them entirely by the pool.

4. Easy Air Access And A Growing Global Reach
Another big reason Cabo is climbing the rankings: it’s getting easier to reach from more places.
Esponda notes that there are now 32 direct routes from U.S. cities into Los Cabos, with at least one more on the way, and a specific push to add service from key East Coast hubs like Boston, Philadelphia, and Miami. At the same time, the tourism board is expanding connections from Europe and South America, targeting segments like destination weddings that book 6–12 months in advance and provide a stable base of high-value travelers.
All that demand is why Los Cabos Airport is running more like a mini-hub than a sleepy beach airport, with up to double the usual number of flights on peak Saturdays in high season and more than 7 million passengers per year moving through SJD.
To keep up, the airport is in the middle of a major transformation, including plans to unify into a single terminal and add new systems to handle growing crowds—changes we’ve already broken down in our step-by-step guides to surviving high season and understanding the new terminal layout.

5. A Safe, Well-Run Destination That Powers The Local Economy
Los Cabos isn’t just busy—it’s become an economic engine for all of Baja California Sur.
Tourism now generates about 33% of the state’s GDP, and recent economic data shows Baja California Sur leading the country in growth during the first half of the year, largely thanks to the visitor economy. (El Cronista) A community survey from the tourism trust found that around 75% of Cabo residents have formal jobs with full legal benefits, compared to roughly 50% nationally—proof that this boom is creating more stable, higher-quality employment than in many other tourism hubs.
On the ground, authorities are trying to match booming numbers with visible safety upgrades, from stronger beach management and lifeguard coverage to stepped-up patrols around marinas and resort zones—moves we detailed in our recent guide to five things Los Cabos authorities are doing to keep tourists safe this winter.
The destination has also been recognized as “Best Destination in Mexico” at the Travel Weekly Readers Choice Awards for two years in a row, a nod from the travel industry that Cabo is delivering a consistently high-quality experience.

The Bottom Line For Travelers
Put it all together—high-value visitors, a surging luxury hotel scene, world-class certified beaches, expanding airlift, and serious investment in safety and infrastructure—and it’s clear why Los Cabos has climbed into Mexico’s top three most-visited destinations and shows no sign of slowing down.
