22 Los Cabos Beaches Receive Award For Being The Best In Mexico

Los Cabos just got another big win for travelers who care about clean, well-managed, swimmable beaches.

We at The Cabo Sun can confirm that the destination has been awarded 22 new Platinum Beach (Playa Platino) certifications by Mexico’s Instituto Mexicano de Normalización y Certificación (IMEEC), announced during the Fifth Sustainable Beaches Meeting held in Cancun.

That’s a massive vote of confidence in how Los Cabos is taking care of its coastline and a strong follow-up to the way the destination already leads the country in internationally recognized Blue Flag beaches.

What was recognized?

According to local officials, the certifications went to a mix of Cabo’s superstar tourist beaches and some lesser-known spots that locals love.

The list includes: El Corsario, virtually the entire swimmable stretch of Médano (Breathless, Hacienda, ME Cabo, Casa Dorada, Club Cascadas de Baja, Pueblo Bonito Los Cabos, Pueblo Bonito Rosé, the RIU section, Villa del Palmar, Villa del Arco, Villa La Estancia), plus Santa María, Las Viudas, Acapulquito, Chileno, Palmilla, La Ribera, El Surgidero and La Gaviota.

That’s basically saying: the beaches visitors actually go to are the ones being kept to the highest standard.

If you’ve been following our coverage of how Cabo keeps racking up Blue Flag honors — Los Cabos hit 27 certified beaches this fall, the most in Mexico — this new batch of national-level awards fits right in with that sustainability push.

We recently broke down why those Blue Flags matter for water quality, lifeguards, and services for travelers, and this Platino news is another layer on top of that for visitors who want to know “Is the beach I’m going to actually being maintained?”

Why it matters for travelers

Platinum certification sounds nice, but what does it actually get you on vacation?

  1. Cleaner, better-managed beaches. These certifications evaluate cleanliness, infrastructure, and environmental management. It’s the same direction Los Cabos laid out in its new sustainability plan — a future where mass tourism doesn’t wreck the shoreline.
  2. More consistent safety messaging. A lot of the recognized beaches are the same ones where Zofemat has been installing and updating flag systems to keep tourists from getting in trouble when conditions change by the hour, especially at busy Médano. If you see new flags, pay attention — we already explained how these color codes work in our recent story on beach flags and safety.
  3. Proof Cabo is serious about sustainability. This isn’t a one-off award. Officials said the 15th City Council and Zofemat are going to keep pushing environmental education, beach cleanups, and new tech for waste and coastal conservation so Cabo can keep expanding the number of certified beaches. That’s the kind of back-end work that lets travelers show up and just enjoy the water.

Médano basically went platinum

One of the coolest parts of this announcement is how many Médano segments were certified. For tourists, Médano is Cabo — the swimmable bay, Land’s End views, resorts right on the sand, restaurants behind you, tour vendors in front of you.

Certifying that entire corridor means the part of town visitors use the most is the part local authorities are investing in the most. Combine that with recent safety pieces we’ve reported on more dangerous beaches and black-flag closures and you can see the pattern: Cabo wants visitors in the water, but only where it’s actually safe.

What you should do with this info

  • Pick a certified beach first. If your resort fronts Chileno, Santa María, Palmilla, or certified Médano sections, that’s a win — stay there.
  • Still check the flags. Certification doesn’t cancel surf, storms, or hurricane-season leftovers we’ve been warning about this month. If it’s red or black, stay out.
  • Join the cleanup vibe. A bunch of these certifications were earned thanks to community cleanups and environmental monitoring. If your hotel offers one, jump in — it actually helps Cabo keep the awards.

For a destination that already leads Mexico on beach quality, adding 22 Platinum Beach certifications is Cabo telling the rest of the country: we’re not done yet.
