There is no way around it. Luxurious destinations are synonymous with prohibitive prices.
With an average room in Los Cabos now costing roughly $560 per night, it has become evident that those wanting to head here for their holidays should start budgeting well in advance.
Costs in this Mexican municipality keep rising. Not by chance, the latest report by the Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE) showed how Baja California Sur remains the Mexican state with the highest gas rates in the country.
But does this mean that tourists on a budget cannot enjoy a holiday to this popular destination? Luckily not! Here are three ways travelers can save amid rising costs in Los Cabos.
Check out different accommodation options
One of the highest costs Los Cabos tourists have to face is their accommodation. This Mexican municipality is known for its all-inclusive resorts offering guests stunning amenities and state-of-the-art services.
Unfortunately, however, spending a night in one of these properties will cost you several hundred dollars.
Booking a room with a huge group of friends will surely help you cut down costs, but the best way to reduce your expenses is surely opting for cheaper accommodation.
With over 1,000 Airbnbs located in Los Cabos, visitors will find apartments to suit all pockets.
Airbnb is not only great for getting that ‘home’ feeling but it will also help you save some money on meals, as most properties come equipped with a kitchen.
Another great option is booking a hostel. When we think of this type of accommodation we often picture massive dorms, dirty rooms, and noisy roommates. But this is not always the case.
Several hostels now offer private rooms. On top of this, some of these properties offer top-notch features, such as outdoor pools where to relax when the ocean becomes inaccessible to bathers.
Hostels can also be great places to meet like-minded people and form new friendships.
Choose your dates carefully
The second best thing travelers can do to save money on their Los Cabos trip is to choose their dates carefully.
Of course, opting for the low season will help you save a great deal of money. Most tourists think that spending the summer in Mexico is not worth it, but the truth is that you can have a great vacation even in August.
Sure, you may get a bit of rain, but there are plenty of positive sides too! Just imagine how charming it would be to spend a day on one of Los Cabos’ breathtaking beaches without having to deal with thousands of tourists.
If you still prefer to book during the high season, make sure to avoid weekends. This is when most people choose to visit Los Cabos, meaning that the prices for your accommodation and plane ticket will be more expensive. If you can, try to book your flight on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday, as these days tend to be cheaper.
Rethink your activities
Most tourists want to head to Los Cabos to make the most out of the city’s luxurious amenities. Whether you’re planning a day at the spa or a dinner in a fine-dining restaurant, these activities are going to cost you a lot.
Make sure to alternate these with cheaper, or even free, experiences. A day sunbathing at the beach is not going to cost you a single penny!
Hiking in the Sierra de la Laguna mountain range is another good alternative for those on a budget.
Of course, we cannot forget sightseeing. With plenty of little towns to choose from, this is the best way to truly immerse yourself in the most authentic Mexican culture, without paying a small fortune.
Last but not least, remember to try some street food. Even though a dinner in a fine-dining restaurant is almost a must when visiting Los Cabos, don’t forget that local street vendors can offer you a delicious meal for a fraction of the price.
