Why Los Cabos Is Increasing Security Operations On Medano Beach This Summer

Share The Article

El Médano beach is the undisputed heart of the Cabo San Lucas tourist zone, drawing huge crowds for its swimmable waters and iconic views of Land’s End.

However, navigating the sand has become increasingly difficult recently due to a persistent surge in unregulated street vendors.

In response to this ongoing challenge, local authorities are preparing to significantly increase security operations and personnel on the beach ahead of the busy summer vacation season.

The Surge In Unregulated Vendors 🛑

The presence of unregulated street vendors continues to be a major hurdle for municipal authorities in the main tourist areas of Cabo San Lucas.

El Médano beach is particularly difficult to manage because it features multiple access points, allowing informal vendors to easily enter the area from various locations.

Manuel Barajas, the head of Tax Inspection in Los Cabos, confirmed that there are currently around 100 informal street vendors operating in the municipality’s tourist zones.

This number fluctuates drastically with the seasons, as authorities have detected up to 200 informal vendors working the beaches during peak travel periods.

To combat this, the city is bringing in additional personnel from San José del Cabo to help reinforce the operations specifically aimed at clearing El Médano.

The Rise Of Child Vendors 🧒

Beyond the sheer volume of informal commerce, officials are closely monitoring the concerning presence of minors working as street vendors. This specific issue tends to escalate whenever schools let out for vacation periods.

  • Authorities have currently detected approximately 40 minors engaging in street vending across different tourist hotspots.
  • These minors have been spotted primarily on El Médano beach, throughout the Marina, and in the downtown area of Cabo San Lucas.
  • While the numbers drop during the regular school year due to mandatory education laws, officials anticipate a noticeable increase in child vendors during the upcoming summer break.

What Tourists Can Expect This Summer ☀️

If you are planning to spend your days relaxing on El Médano this summer, you will likely notice a heightened official presence. Following recent regulatory operations implemented at the Cabo San Lucas Marina, the municipal focus is now shifting heavily toward the beach to address the unregulated commerce.

The Tax Inspection office is coordinating with other municipal departments to launch continuous operations designed to remove these informal vendors.

While authorities acknowledge that controlling the situation is a complex task due to the high mobility of the sellers and the sheer size of the beach, these reinforced summer operations aim to provide a more relaxing and hassle-free environment for tourists.
