In recent years, Los Cabos has become one of the most popular destinations among American tourists.

According to a recent report published by the Mexican Ministry of Tourism (SECTUR) and based on data from the Migration Policy Unit-Registration and Identity of Persons of the Ministry of the Interior (SEGOB), the United States was the country with the highest number of arrivals by air in Mexico in 2023.

In total, 13 million 524 thousand American tourists opted for a Mexican holiday in 2023, with several of these heading to Los Cabos.

Not by chance, last year, the San José del Cabo Airport was the third in Mexico for the number of international arrivals.

But why do Americans keep choosing this Mexican municipality for their holidays? Here are a few factors.

Plenty of direct flights

The airport of San José del Cabo is connected via direct flight to 28 US cities. Among these are San Diego, San Francisco, Sacramento, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Denver, and Kansas City, to mention a few.

Non-stop flights are a great incentive for American tourists as they allow people to reach a given area within a few hours instead of stopping for long layovers before reaching their final destination.

Direct flights allow American tourists to save plenty of time, making short getaways suddenly possible.

Ideal time zone

Another factor leading so many American tourists to choose Los Cabos for their holiday is the local time zone.

Los Cabos is set on the Mexican Pacific Standard Time (GMT -7). This is ideal for those coming to this municipality from the USA as, in the worst-case scenario, tourists will experience a two-hour difference from their departure point. This is beneficial for several reasons.

First of all, it allows people to travel without dealing with the negative effects of jet lag. There’s nothing worse than arriving at your destination and having to readjust to the local time zone, wasting precious vacation days.

This also means that once American tourists return to their home country, they will be able to easily readjust to the local time without having to take an extra day off work for this purpose.

Last but not least, those working as freelancers or in companies that require them to be available from time to time during their holiday will be able to easily work from this destination without having to wake up in the middle of the night for work calls and meetings.

Perfect weather

Los Cabos has become particularly popular as a winter destination among American tourists due to the warm temperatures typical of this area.

Plenty of US citizens every year decide to escape the freezing temperatures characteristic of northern states to get some well-deserved vitamin D in one of the many breathtaking beaches in Los Cabos.

The rainy season in Baja California Sur lasts from July to October, meaning that people heading here during the winter months will most likely enjoy sunny days and warm temperatures throughout their holidays.

The favorable weather allows tourists to engage in all sorts of outdoor activities. Some of the most popular ones include hiking, horse riding, and golfing. Of course, people are also choosing Los Cabos to make the most out of the local beaches.

American travelers come here to try out water activities, such as snorkeling, surfing, and diving. Those who prefer a more laid-back holiday can simply relax on the beach, enjoying a refreshing cocktail from one of the many bars located on the shore and soaking up the sun before returning to the freezing US temperatures.

The winter season is also renowned for being the best period for whale watching. These gentle giants arrive on the coasts of Baja California Sur in early December and leave again in mid-April.

This means that American tourists heading here during the winter months can easily book a whale-watching tour to try to spot these magnificent animals in their natural habitat.
