It’s not uncommon to hear on the news or from the U.S. State Department that it’s unsafe to travel in certain parts of Mexico.   

While that may be true for some areas, Los Cabos is certainly not one of them, and, in fact, hundreds of thousands of American tourists visit the destination every year.   

It probably doesn’t come as a surprise, then, that the vast majority feel safe in Los Cabos, according to a new report.   

Why Los Cabos Is Safer Than Other Parts Of Mexico 

One of the biggest reasons Los Cabos is safer than some other areas of Mexico is its location.   

The destination sits at the tip of the Baja California Peninsula, far removed from Mexico’s mainland.   

Another factor that contributes to its safety is the fact that it’s a tourist destination, so officials work hard to keep it safe for tourists.

What Los Cabos Does To Enhance Safety For Tourists 

Authorities in Los Cabos are always launching operations specifically designed to keep tourists safe.   

It’s not uncommon for them to utilize the military to patrol popular tourist areas like the beaches, the marina, and the downtown area.   

Over the last year or so they have also installed numerous security cameras throughout the tourist areas of the city and have even used drones to aid in protecting tourists visiting Los Cabos.

Safest Areas To Stay In Los Cabos 

The safest areas to stay in Los Cabos are those designated as tourist areas.   

In Cabo San Lucas, this is near the marina and along Medano Beach, where there are plenty of hotels to choose from.   

In San Jose del Cabo, pretty much anywhere that there are hotels are safe, and the town is, in general, pretty safe overall.   

The Tourist Corridor that runs between the two cities is also one of the safest areas to stay in.

Staying Safe On Your Los Cabos Vacation 

As with any vacation destination, there are still precautions to take to protect yourself because criminals do tend to target tourists.   

The main thing to do to keep yourself safe is to always be aware of your surroundings.   

It’s also important to not wander off into areas you don’t know or walk around alone at night.   

Last but not least, you should avoid being too flashy with expensive jewelry and accessories so as not to draw attention to yourself.

Upon arrival at Los Cabos International Airport, you’ll have a number of options for getting safely to your hotel.   

Taxis are available but don’t have the best reputation because they are only minimally regulated, and public transportation in Los Cabos leaves something to be desired.
