Los Cabos Free WiFi Initiative

Free WiFi service is on its way to serve tourists at the popular UNESCO World Heritage Site of Cabo Pulmo in Baja California Sur.

Because the homes and hotels in the area reside off the grid, a special solar panel system will be set up to power the WiFi service for the area.

According to the Mayor of Los Cabos, Oscar Leggs, the WiFi system is being set up to provide access to emergency services in the rural area. However, it can also be used by tourists as well.

It is being paired with a new emergency response and fire station to serve the area and its tourists at La Ribera.

Connecting to Tourism

The new WiFi service at Cabo Pulmo is part of an overall focus on upgrading the visitor amenities in the Los Cabos area to better serve tourism.

Cabo Pulmo is the focal point of a travel trend sweeping the world today. The three trends of sustainability, wellness, and nature are shaping how tourists travel today and the destinations they choose to visit.

It also is connected to attracting more upscale luxury travelers to Los Cabos. These visitors tend to be more tech-savvy and want to share their experiences while they travel.

Whether that means Tik Tok videos, Facebook Live or even posting on Instagram, that takes high-speed internet connections even in the most remote natural vacation spots around the globe.

The new Cabo Pulmo WiFi access point makes that connection accessible to all, including tourists, without a charge.

What it Means For Visitors

Tourists will no longer will have to rely on spotty and slow cellular internet service in the rural area.

It will also serve international visitors who don’t want to pay for expensive remote cell service when visiting Los Cabos and desire to rely on WiFi connections instead.

Fast WiFi service will allow visitors to share and even send live videos from the location, sharing the beauty of Cabo Pulmo all around the world.

Additionally, it will help improve the overall safety of the area for tourists. If an incident were to happen at Cabo Pulmo, unreliable cellular service would make it a challenge to reach first responders in an emergency.

The new free WiFi service will allow for WiFi calling of emergency numbers in the event of a medical condition, accident, or other urgent need.

Work is expected to start shortly on the new Cabo Pulmo WiFi access point, and due to the low infrastructure need for an off-the-grid solar panel system, it should be up and running within a couple of weeks.

The Cabo Pulmo installation follows the launch of free WiFi service at the Amelia Wilkes public square in Los Cabos.

A total of ten more free municipal WiFi access points installations are in the current plans for the Los Cabos area.
