Los Cabos might be known for its beautiful beaches, but for unsuspecting tourists, they can be dangerous.

Usually, the danger stems from the unpredictable waves and strong currents, which make a number of Los Cabos beaches unswimmable.

But a new weather phenomenon is making some of the otherwise swimmable beaches more dangerous now too.

Amid these dangerous swells that are plaguing Los Cabos right now, one of the most popular beaches, Medano Beach, is the safest beach for swimming in Los Cabos.

A Dangerous Weather Phenomenon

Recently Los Cabos has been battered with huge swells that are caused by severe storms that take place at sea.

These swells, despite the fact that they are a ways from the shore, cause some dangerous water conditions close enough to the shore to harm beachgoers.

The already rough seas, characterized by formidable waves and currents, have been even more dangerous than usual.

The Most Dangerous Beaches Right Now

The most dangerous beaches right now are the ones already known for their rough waters.

Places where surfers go for the strong waves, like Costa Azul in San Jose del Cabo, are more unsafe than ever for beachgoers.

Also, in San Jose del Cabo, the beaches in the Puerto Los Cabos area, which don’t have any rock formations to work as a barrier from the sea, are also more dangerous right now.

Understanding Beach Flags

Regardless of when you swim in the waters surrounding Los Cabos, it’s important to understand and heed the warnings of the beach flags.

The most important flag is the Black Flag, which means that the beach is completely off-limits.

But just because the Black Flag is the most important does not mean that the others should be ignored.

Both Red and Yellow flags are also important, Red indicating that you shouldn’t swim and Yellow notifying swimmers to be extremely cautious.

Green means beaches are safe.

The Calm Waters Of San Lucas Bay

San Lucas Bay, which is where Medano Beach is located, is known for its calm waters, so this is currently the safest area to swim.

Monuments Beach, which sits on the eastern side of San Lucas Bay, is also not as affected by the sea swells and is safe for swimming.

Regardless of whether the beach is deemed swimmable or not, though, you should always swim where there’s a lifeguard and heed the warnings of beach flags.

Medano – Los Cabos’ Most Popular Beach

Medano Beach, located in Cabo San Lucas, isn’t just Los Cabos’ most popular beach because it’s swimmable, although that does help.

But Medano Beach, or Playa El Medano as the locals call it, is also the most exciting beach in Los Cabos.

A variety of water activities are offered at Medano Beach, there are plenty of chairs and umbrellas for rent, and beach clubs, cantinas, and restaurants line the beach.

Alternatives To A Beach Day

If you have decided to avoid the beaches because of the current conditions, there are plenty of ways to still enjoy Los Cabos nature.

Hiking, biking, horseback riding, and camel riding are all fantastic ways to explore the great outdoors in Los Cabos.

Simply walking through the San Jose del Cabo arts district or the Cabo San Lucas Marina are also both great ways to spend a day off the beach in Los Cabos as well.

Beach Safety In Los Cabos

At least one person has already lost their life due to the water conditions in Los Cabos.

It took place on a beach that didn’t have a lifeguard at the time.

The incident highlights the importance of swimming in the range of a lifeguard so that you can ensure a safe Los Cabos vacation.
