Los Cabos continues to be a top destination for travelers for a variety of reasons. The bottom line is people come to Cabo to have a great time.
Whatever a great time means to you, Cabo is all but guaranteed to provide it. Many book stays at worry-free high-end resorts with easy access to amazing beaches.
Others love to go more off-the-grid to spend time in the stunning nature outside the buzzing city life. There’s no wrong way to do it, and that’s what is awesome about Cabo.
If there is one thing Cabo does lack, its fewer expansion opportunities. Given its geography as the southernmost point of the Baja peninsula, there is only so much room for growth.
That’s why when a hidden gem is discovered, news travels fast! That’s the case for La Ribera. The government has taken notice of this trendy resort hotspot and will invest in a new highway to highlight it.
Where Is La Ribera?
La Ribera is a small yet gorgeous region of Baja California Sur tucked away from the hustle and bustle of Los Cabos.

This area is a tranquil gem home to just 2,000 residents and roughly an hour north of the Los Cabos International Airport on some of the peninsula’s finest coastline.
Due to an influx of travelers heading this way, the government has officially announced a new highway that will connect this region straight from the Los Cabos’ main airport.
As of now, the most efficient way to reach La Ribera would be to take Mexico 1 for about an hour. The drive is definitely worth it, but new plans should eliminate traffic congestion or, at the very least, help.
As calm as this town is, there is still a ton to offer. Those in the know come here for a wide variety of activities, mainly related to the pristine waters of this side of Mexico.
Why Has La Ribera Become A Hotspot?
La Ribera is a pure paradise for a fisherman. Tourists can catch a huge trophy fish to brag to their friends.
It’s a common spot to lure in Marlin, Tuna and Wahoo, to name a few. Others are more interested in other water activities such as kayaking, snorkeling, paddle-boarding and even diving for a true adventurer.
It’s not only the blue waters that are a top attraction; it’s being outside in general. Visitors can go hiking, camping and lounge at beautiful beaches.
Those who stay here often find themselves exploring the nearby Cabo Pulmo National Park for even more awesome outdoor things to do, such as seeing one of the oldest living coral reefs in Mexico.

This area is also super safe. Sometimes there are travel advisories for Los Cabos that can turn people away, even though there is rarely violent crime.
More often than not, it’s petty crime and typical tourist scams to be aware of when traveling. But here in La Ribera, the quiet, calm atmosphere is more welcoming to those seeking peace and safety for a worry-free getaway.
Especially when traveling as a family. In fact, this region has some serious luxe hotels and resorts, including the Four Seasons Resort Los Cabos at Costa Palmas.
Although the government has made the new highway project official, there is no timeframe confirmed as of yet.

What it does include is the plan to expand the lanes from 7 to 12 to relieve congestion and allow more room to pull over in emergencies.
Cornering roads and taking away some curves will also improve the safety of drivers. Plus, new paving to make roads much smoother. Nobody wants a flat tire on vacation!
It is estimated the entire project will extend up to 25 miles (40 kilometers). The project is just that, a project until further notice.
Right now, everything is an estimation until further notice. More announcements are expected next year when more information is gathered after completing the first steps.
