Summer can be a fantastic time to visit Los Cabos, with plenty of fun in the sand and surf for international visitors.

However, a fun summer vacation could quickly become a risk if some general safety precautions aren’t followed in the beach resort destination, and tourists are being urged to watch out for 3 things in particular this summer.

Scenic landmark tourist destination Arch Cabo San Lucas, El Arco, near Playa Amantes beach.

Anchor Your Beach Umbrella

The winds on popular Los Cabos beaches such as El Medano and El Chileno can be unpredictable at times and come out of nowhere.

While a cooling ocean breeze on a hot and humid Los Cabos summer day at the beach sounds refreshing, the fact is it could quickly become dangerous.

Recently, a number of tourists reported seeing unidentified flying objects off the coast of El Chileno Beach in Los Cabos.

The social media post and pictures when viral, with tourists, scientists, local officials, and even alien conspiracy watchers debating what the flying saucer-like items were.

No, it was not the little green men from Mars visiting Los Cabos for a quick vacation. Instead, they were beach umbrellas soaring in the skies over the ocean.

It was fortunate that they did not hit anyone once they fell to the ground.

There have been several reports in the news of people being injured by umbrellas improperly staked and anchored in the sand.

Gruesome enough, there has even been a report of someone being impaled by the sharp pointed end of a beach umbrella in other destinations, so the danger is not being overstated.

Visitors to Los Cabos should ensure that their beach umbrella is driven deep into the sand and tied to heavy weights such as concrete blocks or sandbags to avoid injuries from flying umbrellas.

Watch The Waves

Most visitors to Los Cabos are not accustomed to swimming in waves churned up by offshore tropical weather systems.

However, the threat they can pose to even the sturdiest swimmer can be substantial.

A number of videos have shown up on social media showing visitors to Los Cabos struggling to swim in the tropical system kicked up waves on Los Cabos beaches.

Lifeguard looking at the waves on a beach

One shows a tourist with a drink in her hand playing in the strong waves. She ended up spilling the drink as the glass sailed out to the ocean in the current.

Another showed a woman trying to get to her feet after being battered by the high waves. She was unable to get up during the course of the short video.

She ultimately was dragged from the water showing an uncomfortable playful attitude, but obviously traumatized from the experience.

Flags were posted and ignored at the beach, warning tourists of the dangerous conditions in the water.

The waves in Los Cabos are especially strong in the summer season.

Travelers should first and foremost observe and respect the flags posted at the beaches and be aware of the dangerous ocean conditions when tropical storm systems are present near Los Cabos.

Beware of the Heat

The most dangerous condition affecting international tourists at the beaches in Los Cabos is the deadly combination of heat and humidity.

Woman Applying Sunscreen On Her Own Shoulders

The heat can quickly exhaust and dehydrate a visitor not accustomed to the intense summer sun in Los Cabos.

Located closer to the equator than the United States, the sun is stronger and overhead longer in Los Cabos.

Tourists should be on the lookout for red skin and a strange absence of sweating in the hot weather. These conditions are not normal and can be an early sign of heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

In this case, the visitor should be removed from the sun, and first responders should be notified of this important medical condition.

To avoid this issue, try to find some shade when visiting a beach in Los Cabos, liberally apply sunscreen, and be sure to drink plenty of fluids. Try to avoid alcohol when directly in the sun.
