Most of us, when we think of Los Cabos, the first thing that comes to mind is great beaches and incredible all-inclusives, and it’s easy to see why.

There is another side of each of the cities that make up the destination, though, and that’s the historic centers of Los Cabos.

In the past, these areas of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo were not the focus of tourism promotion.

But now Los Cabos is preparing to turn these historic centers into Mexico’s next Magical Neighborhoods.

Turning Cabo San Lucas And San Jose Del Cabo Into Magical Neighborhoods

In order to become a “Magical Neighborhood,” the necessary components must already be there.

Since the sought-after designation focuses on the history and culture of a specific city, these elements must be present.

In both Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, there are more historically and culturally rich neighborhoods to explore.

What Does It Mean To Be A Magical Neighborhood

A Magical Neighborhood, similar to a Magic Town, must have something culturally or historically significant about it.

In San Jose del Cabo, for example, it’s the historic city center, or main square, and the downtown area, which is characterized by historic architecture, colorful buildings, cobblestone streets, and shops selling Mexican handicrafts and art.

In Cabo San Lucas, the downtown area is significant as well, with its own historic architecture, museums, and historical and cultural landmarks.

When the Project Is Set To Begin

The project to turn these neighborhoods into Magical Neighborhoods involves investing money into them.

The money will be used to improve their urban image, update infrastructure, and promote their history and culture.

That project will start with San Jose del Cabo in about 3-4 months, with Cabo San Lucas to follow.

What This Means For Tourists

For tourists, this project means two things.

One, these areas will be more accessible and welcoming than ever.

The second thing is, with the promotion of these areas, tourists will be more aware of where they are, what there is to see, and why they are important for those who want to get to know Los Cabos.

You don’t have to wait for these areas of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo to become Magical Neighborhoods to explore their history and culture.

  • City Hall (Palacio Municipal) – San Jose del Cabo

What’s The Difference Between A Magical Neighborhood And A Magic Town?

The requirements to become one of Mexico’s magical neighborhoods aren’t much different than those necessary to become a magic town; they are just on a smaller scale.

A Magic Town must have historical, cultural, or natural significance in order to receive this coveted designation and must maintain appearances to keep the status.

The difference in Magical Neighborhoods is that they do not have to improve their appearance to be selected or keep their status, which lends to their authenticity.

Cabo San Lucas Vs. San Jose Del Cabo – Choosing The Best Place To Stay For Your Los Cabos Vacation

San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas both have a lot to offer.  If you’re really into history, culture, and authenticity, though, San Jose del Cabo is where you want to stay.

It’s also much quieter and more laid back.

If you’re looking for a more energetic destination, Cabo San Lucas should be your choice, and you can always go visit San Jose del Cabo during your stay.
