The amazing growth of Los Cabos recently has focused on repositioning the beach travel vacation destination as a luxury tourist hotspot.

The new identity for the region has come at a price, though. Literally.

In fact, the popular United States travel portal Tripadvisor just called Los Cabos the most expensive travel destination for visitors in the entire country.

An Expensive Vacation

Tripadvisor conducted a survey of popular tourist destinations across Mexico and ranked the findings from the most expensive to the most affordable.

Of the 15 different locations ranked on the most expensive travel destinations in Mexico list, Los Cabos was ranked first.

Normally, being ranked first is a good thing. However, for travelers looking to enjoy their vacation getaway to Los Cabos, this was not the list they were hoping to see the beach resort destination at the top.

According to the analysis, a traveler visiting Los Cabos for a vacation trip should plan to spend between about $425 ($7,000 Mexican pesos) and about $550 ($9,000 Mexican pesos) on average per day.

That does not even include the airfare needed to get to Los Cabos.

It is also an average, which means it could be lower in the hot summer and much higher during the peak travel periods, such as the recent spring holiday travel season.

A recent analysis by the National Chamber of Commerce, Services and Tourism (CANACO) expects that cost to increase by about 15 percent every year, on average, compared to other cities in Mexico.

What’s Driving the Price Increases?

The Ministry of Tourism (SECTUR) in Mexico took a look at the different services travelers use when visiting a beach resort destination in the country, such as Los Cabos, and determined the biggest driver of the higher tourist expenses was actually the flights.

Their research showed that airline flights to Mexico, on average, have increased more than 30 percent per year.

The other charges most travelers experienced while on vacation were a little more moderate.

Tour packages, roadway tolls, and even restaurants and bars were all up about seven percent on average each year.

The real deal in a tourist’s budget for a vacation in places like Los Cabos was actually the room rates at hotels which averaged a six percent increase on average each year.

The analysis was created by the Ministry of Tourism (SECTUR) to allow travelers to anticipate in advance how much it would cost for a vacation getaway to Mexico.

It was also an opportunity for tourism officials to demonstrate that despite the fact that destinations like Los Cabos are relatively expensive from a country perspective, the actual services received on-ground during a vacation still represent a good deal for visitors.

What Travelers Need to Know

Tourists heading to Los Cabos now have a clearer picture of what it costs for a vacation getaway to what is emerging as one of the premier luxury travel destinations in Mexico.

There are several ways to stretch a Los Cabos vacation budget.

The main way to save money is to book flights, tours, and accommodations well in advance of the travel date.

Tourists can also save money by avoiding traveling during the peak spring and winter travel periods. It is definitely hot, humid, and rainy in summer, but that’s when many good deals are available for budget travelers.

Visitors can also save money by sharing rooms and expenses as well as comparison shopping for accommodations. Often, vacation rentals in the city are cheaper than expensive beachfront luxury resorts.

Last, travelers should really consider booking an all-inclusive resort because they can be of better value than booking a vacation a la carte with costs for a room, food, and other amenities separately.
