Los Cabos officials continue to take steps to protect travelers due to a recent increase in criminal activity in the beach resort destination since the start of the brand new year.

The latest step is the municipality putting out a call for additional police officers in the area.

Call For Additional Police

Responding to the need for additional law enforcement patrols in Los Cabos’s tourist zone and other areas, the Public Security, Preventive Police, and Municipal Traffic Department issued an official declaration seeking to add more police officers to the area.

The anticipation is that the additional police on patrol can proactively work to reduce and prevent some key criminal activity that appears to be affecting the tourist perception of visiting Los Cabos for a beach resort vacation getaway.

Drug Related Activity

While Los Cabos is overall a relatively safe spot for tourists from around the world to visit, there is an issue with drug-related activity that is often connected to the tourist zone.

In fact, in the first two months of this year, drug-related criminal activity in the State of Baja California Sur, which includes Los Cabos, increased by a staggering 61.7 percent.

It led the number of crimes was Los Cabos, with 93 cases in January and February of this year.

Local police have stepped up patrols related to drug dealing crimes and have employed K9 units to help with the process.

The plan is to add more police officers to continue this strict enforcement, especially in the tourist zone, to make sure that travelers are protected against this type of criminal activity.

While many people will believe that drug-related offenses are less dangerous criminal activity than other crimes, the fact is drug crimes often lead to more violent actions.

Traffic Related Crimes

Another crime that often affects tourists is traffic-related incidents on the local roadways of Los Cabos.

While most tourists decide not to drive on the roads while on their vacation getaway to Los Cabos, they are affected by the excessive speeds of other drivers when riding in a ride share or taxi around town.

The excess speeds are putting more and more travelers at risk of danger while on vacation each and every day.

Recently, law enforcement in Los Cabos has started to increase the number of patrols dispatched to high-traffic areas, such as the Transpeninsular Highway, with radar guns to track the speed of vehicles.

Additional police will be hired to increase these patrols to control the traffic issue, which is a concern not only at the local municipal level but also at the state and federal law enforcement levels.

What Travelers Need to Know

While safety and security are a priority for law enforcement in Los Cabos, and the area is generally seen as a relatively safe vacation getaway for tourists, more police will soon be deployed to help reduce some key criminal trouble areas in the region.

The hope is that aggressive work to reduce crime will, in part, help improve travelers’ perceptions of the area’s safety and keep the United States Department of State travel advisory level at the same level.

Currently, the State of Baja California Sur, which includes Los Cabos, is at threat level two – exercise increased caution.

The increase in criminal activity since the start of the year threatens the relatively low level of risk relayed to tourists in the State Department advisory.

The good news is that the municipal government in Los Cabos is taking the issue seriously and continually working to ensure that travelers to the beach resort remain safe and secure during their vacation getaway.
