Los Cabos Health Warning Issued After Latest Storm

There’s still a little over two more months of hurricane season left in Los Cabos, which has been fairly lucky so far this year.

There haven’t been any hurricanes yet, but there was recently a tropical storm that hit, and even though it didn’t cause a lot of structural damage, Tropical Storm Ileana did leave its mark.

It caused some significant flooding in the destination, resulting in overflowing the sewage system, which has led to Los Cabos issuing a health warning following this latest storm.

The Health Warning

The health warning issued by Los Cabos has to do with one of tourists’ favorite things to enjoy when visiting Mexico, street food.

Los Cabos is a fantastic place to have this time-honored experience, but as a result of the flooding and sewage overflow, now might not be the time to do it.

Officials are warning vendors that foodborne illnesses can be caused by the sanitation issues produced by the presence of black water in the streets.

How The Issue Is Being Handled

Health officials have been making their rounds in Los Cabos.

They’re advising street food sellers and food vendors to refrain from selling food items until the issue is resolved.

Once all is cleaned up, officials ask these sellers to perform deep cleaning around their areas and on their equipment before serving food again.

The Dangers Of Contaminated Street Food

Food contaminated by issues stemming from sewage problems can cause some pretty nasty foodborne illnesses.

Foodborne illnesses typically last about 4-7 days.

While most people who get foodborne illness or food poisoning recover on their own, without any treatment, the last thing you want is for you to have to spend your entire Los Cabos vacation ill.

Street Food In Los Cabos

Street food in Los Cabos is mainly offered by two different types of sellers.

Some sell street food items out of carts, or baskets attached to bikes, and then some have stands or a semi-fixed stall set up, either on a street or at a local market.

Food items vary from vendor to vendor, depending on what they are operating out of.

Street Food In Restaurants

“Street food” is a term essentially used to describe homemade food that is relatively inexpensive to prepare.

While the true experience is to get it from a cart or a food stall, many street food staples are offered in authentic Mexican restaurants in Los Cabos too.

A few of the restaurants in the area where you can get good street food are:

  • Tropical Kitchen Cabo
  • Fuego, Latin Street Food
  • Mercabo Gourmet Street Food

Popular Street Food Items To Try In Los Cabos

Whether you arrive in Los Cabos and the street food vendors are up and running or you opt for a more traditional restaurant setting, there are several items that are popular in Los Cabos.

You’ve likely heard of, and probably even tried, some of the most popular street food items, like tacos, tamales, tostadas, and quesadillas, but there are several other delicious items to try.

Elote, molote, tortas, chayote, birria, and churros are all popular street food items too.

Street Food At Your Resort

Pretty much every luxury all-inclusive resort in Cabo has at least one Mexican restaurant, some casual and some more elevated.

Many of these resorts, like Villa del Arco, and Chileno Bay Resort and Residences, also have a more informal option as well, either in the form of a food truck on the property, or a poolside or beachfront taco bar setup.

You may want to book one of these just to be sure that you do get that “street food” experience if you can’t get it anywhere else when visiting Los Cabos.
