TripAdvisor released its seasonal travel index among travelers from different countries across the globe. Potentially to no one’s surprise, Mexican destinations, including Los Cabos, made up 4 of the top five cities that Americans are planning to travel to internationally this winter. The proximity to Mexican beaches and deals that Americans can find on air travel and lodging options are said to be among the main reasons why U.S. travelers love coming across the border.
Los Cabos Is Gaining Ground
Cancun is still the preferred Mexican destination for American travelers. However, Los Cabos has been gaining ground for years now. In this most recent travel index released by Tripadvisor, Los Cabos came in second ahead of other destinations that have grown in popularity over the last few years, like Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. Puerto Vallarta, who had long been Los Cabos’ main rival for American affection, came in 5th place even behind Playa del Carmen, which is a small resort town near Cancun.
Will Americans Still Travel Despite A Rise In Living Costs?
One of the questions on the survey conducted by TripAdvisor had to do with the willingness of travelers to change their travel plans due to the rise in living costs. The results of this and other similar questions seem to be conflicting, though it seems that more American travelers may be willing to come to Los Cabos due to the proximity factor that we referenced earlier.

People Want To Travel
62% of the people polled mentioned that they would be willing to adapt their travel schedule due to the rising living costs. Out of that 62%, 39% of folks mentioned that to cut costs, they would be willing to shorten their vacation periods. 22% of those polled mentioned that they would be willing to rethink their travel plans and head to a place that was closer to home to reduce their travel costs.
This can certainly mean more Americans will be looking at Los Cabos as a potential travel destination. Oddly enough, more than half of the Americans polled admitted that they anticipated spending more on their vacations this year than they did last year. It seems that the rise in living costs is an issue, but at the same time, travelers understand that costs have increased across the board.
Americans Are “Faithful” Travelers
If Los Cabos ever wants to overtake Cancun as the favorite destination for American travelers, they’re going to have to find ways to break the fidelity of American tourists. 73% of American tourists who are set to take trips this winter season will be visiting a destination that they’ve previously been to. Of course, fidelity is not the only issue that Los Cabos would have to contend with in order to catch up to Cancun. The fact is, the Cancun region essentially features multiple cities that can be considered tourist destinations in their own right.
This includes the Cancun main city and Playa del Carmen, which we mentioned is the 4th favored travel destination for American travelers. Tulum and Isla Mujeres are other popular tourist destinations within the same region. Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo feature unique experiences in their own right in the Cabo region but aren’t necessarily as “developed” as cities near Cancun are. Travelers who come to Los Cabos, though, may prefer it that way.
What Brings Travelers To Los Cabos?
Most of the tourists that arrive in Los Cabos will head to one of the multiple luxury resorts that are now offering all-inclusive travel deals. While the Cabo region offers travel experiences for all sorts of tourists, there’s no question that luxury travel is what the destination is known for. That idea is validated by the number of new resorts that are being built in the region by some of the top hotel brands in the world.
