Travelers from the Valley of the Sun will soon have their own direct flight to Los Cabos.

Starting this May, Frontier Airlines announced the start of international flights from Sky Harbor Airport in Phoenix with nonstop service direct to Los Cabos International Airport.

Frontier Airlines, one of the major ultra-low-cost airlines in the country, announced recently that it will start direct flights connecting Phoenix and Los Cabos on May 16.

The flights will be initially available twice per week, on Thursday and Sunday.

“We’re excited to add the extremely popular destination of Los Cabos, Mexico, to our route map from Phoenix,” said Frontier Vice President for Network Operations and Design Josh Flyr in a story about the new flights.

“Adding an international destination is the next step in our continued growth from PHX as we bring more ultra-low cost flight options to those in the greater Phoenix metro.”

According to a company news release, the flights will start with an introduction fare of $89 each way.

The introductory special will run until March 25 and will be available for flights between May 16 and July 17.

The special fares have a number of holiday-related blackout dates, and the company news release said the flights are still subject to United States government approval.

Restarting Los Cabos Operations

The new flight comes just weeks after Frontier Airlines announced the discontinuance of flights to Los Cabos effective February 28.

Prior to that date, it had a flight connecting Los Cabos with its Denver hub.

The ending of Los Cabos flight service was part of 16 different route cuts named by the airline, leaving Los Cabos International Airport without any flights by the ultra-low-cost carrier.

Frontier Airlines enters a very competitive Phoenix to Los Cabos route corridor with established competitors American Airlines and Southwest Airlines.

In fact, according to airport data, the Phoenix to Los Cabos route is the most popular international flight from Sky Harbor Airport, transporting nearly 440,000 passengers last year.

Go Wild to Los Cabos?

Frontier’s news release about the new route between Phoenix and Los Cabos does mention the airline’s Discount Den program providing discounts for its members.

However, it does not mention whether or not the new flight will be included in the airline’s GoWild! all -you-can-fly passes.

It is assumed that it will be incorporated into the program, which is currently providing all-you-can-fly flights for the summer for $399 and for the entire year at $599. Both programs are available on the airline’s website and start on May 1.

Travelers should review the possibility of including the new Phoenix to Los Cabos flights and other restrictions before making the purchase.

What Travelers Need to Know

At a time when the airline industry is facing challenges flying to Los Cabos due to engine recalls and limited aircraft issues, it’s good to see Frontier recommit to the beach resort tourist destination hotspot.

Frontier Airlines will provide another low-cost option for Phoenix and connecting travelers. However, the entry into an already competitive market directly taking on Southwest Airlines is definitely a questionable route strategy.

Time will tell if this was actually a smart strategy for the airline. As for now, travelers who prefer to fly to Los Cabos International Airport on Frontier Airlines will again have an option for their travel.

This is especially the case if the airline includes the No. 1 international Sky Harbor Airport route as part of its all-you-can-fly GoWild! program.
