The company that runs the Los Cabos airport recently released stats on the number of passengers that have arrived in Los Cabos throughout 2022. So far from January to October, which is the last month that they had complete information on, the number of passengers in 2022 grew by 25% compared to the number of visitors that came to Cabo by air in 2019.
The director of the local airport, Francisco Villaseñor explained that these passenger numbers truly reflect the fact that Cabo has become a popular destination for foreign and domestic tourists. He remarked that they could have more planes landing, but that wouldn’t necessarily mean that more people are actually interested in flying to Los Cabos. By the end of the month Airport authorities expect that at least 6 million 800 thousand passengers will have boarded or disembarked from planes at the Cabo Airport in 2022.
The Numbers Show There’s Still Room To Grow For Direct Flights From The USA
Some of the numbers are rather conflicting. When you look at them closely though they clearly show that there’s still room for the Cabo airport to grow. Particularly, thanks to the demand for flights to Cabo, that American travelers have created. The US has sent over 3 million 360 thousand visitors to Los Cabos. That’s more passengers than have arrived to Los Cabos from within Mexico. Only 2 million 144 thousand passengers have come to Cabo from national airports.

This data seems to confirm that many foreigners are still having to fly to Cabo via Mexico City. The second city that sends the most travelers to Los Cabos is Los Angeles California. This makes a lot of sense when we take into account how close both airports are.
The airline that flies the most people to Los Cabos is Mexican low budget airline Volaris with one million 90 thousand passengers. With American Airlines coming in second place flying around 900 thousand passengers to and from Los Cabos. Further, proving the notion that many foreign travelers are still having to fly to other Mexican airports before arriving in San Jose del Cabo.
Updates To The Airport Continue To Be Planned For The Upcoming Years
As far as the current state of the Cabo airport goes, it came under scrutiny recently when it was criticized by the Association of Mexican travel agencies. The vice president of the organization is currently in Los Cabos overseeing multiple issues with local authorities.
Upon his arrival he took time to mention that the facilities at the Cabo airport, “left much to be desired”. The director of the Cabo airport Francisco Villaseñor mentioned that multiple upgrades are planned for the Cabo airport in 2023. In fact, he said that the facilities have been continuously upgraded since 2010.
Any upgrades that are made to the facility in San Jose del Cabo are pre-planned. The comments made by the travel agency association have no effect on these plans. Villaseñor mentioned,
“If we remember Terminal 1, it has had modifications. Since 2010 it has had modifications, but to this day they have not been enough; That is why we are drawing up a project for short, medium and long term development that takes into account part of the domestic flights section. Right now our goal for next year is modernization, but for now the original structure remains intact, the original building will remain. Everything that we are presenting has nothing to do with the statements that have just been made. We have been developing this for some time. We hire specialized companies that make projections for us”.
