Los Cabos is known for its turquoise water, white sand beaches, and world-class resorts that host tourists and celebrities alike. The city’s reputation as a travel destination has caused it to continually take security measures to the next level to ensure that tourists are protected during their visits.
In the past, these measures have included actions like adding large numbers of police officers to tourist hotspots, deploying the national guard to clamp down on illegal street vending, and increasing video surveillance around the city to prevent and monitor crimes happening real-time.
These measures and previously enacted initiatives have worked at dramatically increasing safety in Los Cabos. According to a recent study, the city was ranked the third safest in Mexico. Tourists have reported feeling incredibly safe in Los Cabos due to the city’s intensive police force, renovated areas, and the general perception that the city is a place where celebrities go to vacation.

Los Cabos Panic Buttons
The latest safety measure the city has contemplated adding are panic buttons. These buttons would tie directly into the communication system of police in the city, and the goal would be to have a police officer show up within a few minutes of the panic button being pressed.
Lieutenant Aarón Bautista Álvarez, head of the Los Cabos Control and Monitoring Department, has informed the press that although the city does not support the buttons yet, they are in the process of identifying where they are needed. “We have them considered to be acquired and installed in the parts that we have already identified where the public might need them.”
It was also noted that while Los Cabos currently does not have panic buttons installed, many hotels and businesses around the city have private ones that ensure guest safety. Lieutenant Álvarez mentioned that there are plans in place to install 15 panic buttons next year in high-traffic and high-crime areas, but the plan is not without its obstacles.
Firstly, Àlvarez is unsure when in 2023 the city will be granted the necessary funds to make the installation. The equipment used for panic buttons is very high-tech and, more importantly, requires a backend infrastructure to ensure that calls are received and responded to in a timely manner.
Along with internal infrastructure, some areas have cooled down due to other measures taken that have made finding the best spots for the panic buttons a moving target. “The idea was to have the panic button by the City Council at the stops, now fortunately with patrols that the authorities have made at the points that were mentioned, (crime) has decreased.”
In the meantime, the Los Cabos Monitoring department will continue to collect crime data to make the best determination of where panic buttons should be placed when funding is made available next year. Àlvarez noted that the department is in constant communication with the Los Cabos police department, the National Guard, and hotel human resource officers, who often collect and analyze this data to ensure that their guests have a safe and enjoyable visit.
Even with the unknown timeline for the installation of panic buttons in 2023, there has never been a better time to visit Los Cabos in 2023. The city is the safest it has ever been, and the destination continues to grow in popularity amongst US travelers. New investments are being made on all fronts, with highly anticipated properties opening in 2023 and new shopping centers and restaurants sprouting up seemingly every month. Award-winning hotels, world-class restaurants, and breathtaking beaches await in Los Cabos, so don’t hesitate and start planning your trip!
