Officials Urge Tourists To Use Extreme Precautions When Swimming At This Popular Los Cabos Beach

If you have ever been to Los Cabos or are planning on going there, then you have probably heard that not all of the beaches in the destination are swimmable.   

This is true, but there are still plenty of great beaches that you can swim at, but one that you’ll want to be careful of is Playa Acapulquito.   

Officials are urging tourists to use extreme precautions when swimming at this popular Los Cabos beach.

Playa Acapulquito, which is also known as Old Man’s Beach, is a blue flag beach.   

It’s known for its large waves and is popular among the surfing community.   

Swimming at Playa Acapulquito should only be attempted by the strongest swimmers, but it’s still a great beach to spend the day watching surfers and relaxing.

The Location Of Playa Acapulquito 

The stunning Acapulquito Beach is located in San Jose del Cabo, just outside of the city limits, at the beginning of the Tourist Corridor.   

It’s situated between two other very popular Los Cabos beaches, Costa Azul and Palmilla Beach.   

To get to the beach you’ll need to rent a car if you’re not staying at one of the nearby hotels that are within walking distance.

Why This Beach Is Dangerous 

The waves at Playa Acapulquito are great for surfers but can be pretty treacherous for the average swimmer.   

Strong currents further contribute to the dangerous nature of the beach.   

Both are so strong that even the shore can be dangerous at times.

Who Visits This Beach 

While surfers frequent Acapulquito Beach, it’s not uncommon to find non-surfing tourists on the beach too.   

Its location between the two other popular beaches brings beachgoers from those beaches on either side as well.   

Outside of surfing season, which is between May and November, the beach is more secluded and perfect for a relaxing beach day.

Safety Precautions To Take When Visiting Playa Acapulquito  

Playa Acapulquito is typically monitored by a lifeguard, so if you are going to swim, you should swim near where they’re stationed.   

Another safety precaution to take doesn’t even involve getting in the water, because the shore itself can be dangerous too.   

It’s important to keep your distance from the shore when conditions are dangerous.   

Last but not least, be sure to look for the beach warning flags, which will indicate beach conditions.

How Beach Warning Flags Can Save Your Life 

Beach warning flags are used in all beach destinations in Mexico to inform beachgoers of how safe the beach is at any given time.   

They warn of dangerous marine life, as well as conditions in the water and on the shore.   

The beach warning flags are as follows: 

• Green – Beach and water are safe for beachgoers.  
• Yellow – Use extreme precautions when entering the water.   
• Red – Beach is open but the water is unsafe for swimming. 
• Black – Water is unsafe to enter and the beach is completely closed.   
• White – Dangerous marine life is present in the water.

Safer Beaches To Visit During Your Los Cabos Vacation 

Even though many Los Cabos beaches have dangerous swimming conditions, there are some great ones for swimming too.   

You’ll find excellent swimming beaches in both San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas, but the most popular beach is Medano Beach, which is in Cabo.   

Other popular beaches are Chileno Beach, Santa Maria Beach, Palmilla Beach, and Lover’s Beach.   

Each of these beaches is unique, but one thing that they have in common is that they are all swimmable.
