The magical town of Todos Santos, touted by some as this corner of Mexico’s answer to Tulum, has experienced its second worrying fire in a matter of days, with the iconic palm groves on the edge of the town this time going up in flames.
Authorities report that the fire was large enough for evacuation plans to be considered near the area in the event that the fire spread to nearby homes.
Sadly, it has been reported by the mayor of Todos Santos, Milena Quiroga Romero, that this latest fire is suspected arson, with an alleged perpetrator already identified by authorities for prosecution.
No Itinerary Rewrites Needed
Travelers to Los Cabos have been visiting the magical town of Todos Santos in big numbers this year, a testament to the growing popularity of destinations near Los Cabos and their worthwhile offering.
However, many travelers keep a close eye on the situation across the state of Baja California Sur in the run up to their vacation, ensuring to stay ahead of the curve if an incident arises that could dictate a change in itinerary.
Thankfully, this latest incident is under control, and poses no threat to day trips and vacations to the hidden-gem that is Todos Santos.
With the perpetrator already identified, the likelihood of another incident of fire around the towns famous desert landscape is very low.
Additionally, while details on the exact damage are scarce, there are no reports of the touristic areas of Todos Santos or its roster of beautiful resorts having been affected or damaged.
Is This Common?
Fires in the palm groves of Todos Santos aren’t new, with two this week alone and the most recent previous incident being recorded around this time in 2022.
The positive is that these fires are usually kept well under control, thanks in huge part to the hard work of local firefighters as well as the combined support of the Mexican Army, Navy, and CONAFOR (Mexican Forestry Commission).
On top of this, the broken-up desert nature of Todos Santos’s surrounding landscapes means it’s highly unlikely for isolated fires to become widespread, with the natural scarcity of fauna here acting like a fuel break to contain fires in controllable pockets.
The last thing travelers visiting Todos Santos want to be concerned about is natural disasters, especially those from California who have the tough memories of recent wildfires in their home state. Luckily, that isn’t a pressing concern in this corner of Baja California Sur.
A Hidden-Gem
Todos Santos is fast becoming this part of Mexico’s answer to Tulum in the southeast of the country.
The beautiful colonial architecture, rich cultural history, and relaxed bohemian vibe give contrast to its southern neighbor of Los Cabos and heighten the comparisons to Tulum.
However, one of the biggest positives about Todos Santos is its more tempered tourism growth. While Tulum in the south has exploded in recent years, and for many, replaced its relaxed vibe to become a mini-Cancun or Playa del Carmen, Todos Santos is holding on to its small and exclusive reputation among travelers.
Day Trip Or Extended Stay?
The vast majority of travelers opt to visit Todos Santos for a day trip, no doubt thanks to its super-convenient distance from Los Cabos.
Getting here takes just 50-60 minutes from Cabo San Lucas, and around 1 hour from San Jose del Cabo.
Travelers can take one of many bus tours on offer, which can be easily scouted online or from their Los Cabos resort reception desk. Also, Todos Santos is a must-see stop on a Baja California Sur road trip, offering a worthwhile stop along the impressive Mexico 19 coastal highway.
With that being said, more and more travelers are opting to spend their whole vacation in Todos Santos. The resorts here are fantastic, with boutique offerings dominating the accommodation options, as well as a healthy selection of more mainstream resorts, giving travelers plenty of options.
Overall, whether just for a day trip or an extended stay, Todos Santos deserves to make it on every traveler’s itinerary when visiting this magical corner of Mexico.
