The hurricane season officially came to a close in Los Cabos on November 30, ending what has been an interesting year for named storms in the Mexican Pacific Ocean.
In all, during the month of October, three named hurricanes impacted many of the tourist hotspots in the Mexican Pacific Ocean including Los Cabos and La Paz.
However, it was not Baja California Sur that got the worst of the hurricane season.
Mexico Takes Hits
For Acapulco, it was not a good year for named hurricanes in the Mexican Pacific Ocean. The popular resort town on the Pacific mainland coast of Mexico nearly got wiped off the map by Hurricane Otis. Otis, a category five storm, was the strongest hurricane ever making landfall in the Mexican Pacific Ocean.
Work is currently underway to create a new vision for the beach resort town as most of the tourist infrastructure will need to be rebuilt, much of it from scratch.
However, Los Cabos was not spared the wrath of the 2023 Mexican Pacific Ocean hurricane season.
Category two Hurricane Norma took a swipe at Los Cabos on October 21, creating considerable damage to the Baja California peninsula including Los Cabos. Later as a tropical storm, it caused havoc on other parts of the peninsula including La Paz.
Wrapping Up the Season
This year will go down in the record books as one of the most destructive hurricane seasons in the Mexican Pacific Ocean. This is especially for the tourist hotspots on the Pacific coast of Mexico which were significantly impacted.
A total of 17 storms were strong enough in the Mexican Pacific Ocean to officially be named tropical storms. This included seven tropical storms, two hurricanes of category one or two, and eight hurricanes of category three or higher.
The last storm closing out the season was Ramon on November 28. The storm fizzled out before it could impact land. Other storms are still possible; however, the official season is closed.
Los Cabos Preparations Worked
Despite the impacts of both Hurricane Hilary and Hurricane Norma in Los Cabos, the area overall faired pretty well despite the strength of both of the storms.
Municipal officials cited their preparation activities as to why Los Cabos avoided more damage from the strong tropical systems.
Before the season even started, civil protection officials in Los Cabos inspected all of the properties to make sure the tourist resort and hotel infrastructure was ready for the season. They also ensured that plans were created and tested in order to keep travelers to Los Cabos safe.
Local law enforcement also took preventative steps to protect tourists and property when it was determined that storms were headed to Los Cabos. The advanced preparation ensured that there were no reports of injuries to tourists during this hurricane season.
Once the peak winter travel season ends, safety representatives for the resorts and hotels in Los Cabos will connect with local civil protection and law enforcement officials to make sure their plans are in place and ready for the next hurricane season.
Hopes are that it will be less eventful than the one this year.
How Tourists Can Be Prepared
The tropical weather season in the Mexican Pacific will start again on May 15, 2024 with Aletta, Bud, and Carlotta. However, there is an outside chance of a storm impacting the season before the official start date.
The best way tourists can prepare for tropical weather storm season, or other potential risks from traveling to Los Cabos, would be by purchasing travel insurance in advance of the start of their vacation getaway to the beach resort destination.
Coverage can potentially cover common concerns such as trip cancellation, trip interruption, tour cancellation losses and even damaged property resulting from tropical storms in Los Cabos.
