The State Commission for the Protection Against Sanitary Risks in Baja California Sur has recently suspended all the sales of food products on the streets of Los Cabos and La Paz.

Authorities are now traveling to the different areas of both municipalities to notify all the street vendors and businesses affected by this new measure. But why was this temporary suspension put in place?

Why these new measurements?

The Baja California Sur’s government decided to take this difficult decision due to the destruction caused by Hurricane Norma in the last few days.

The hurricane arrived in Baja California Sur during the weekend, destroying infrastructures in the state.

As a consequence, sewage spills occurred in several parts of both Los Cabos and La Paz.

Contaminated water can have dreadful consequences when consumed by people, leading to dangerous diseases such as acute diarrhea both in infants and adults alike.

This is why the Head of the Department for the Protection against Sanitary Risks in Baja California Sur, José Manuel Larumbe Piñeda, has recently announced that commercial activities in the food industry can now only be carried out on roads that are free of waste and that where not affected by the hurricane.

Despite this, he clarified that it is still essential for all businesses to carry out extensive cleaning procedures using hyperchlorinated water.

This is a product used to disinfect water lines to protect humans from pathogens often present in contaminated water. It is still unclear when street vendors will be able to resume their work.

Unfortunately, this is not the first time that street vendor businesses all over Los Cabos have been shut down.

At the beginning of September of this year, the Los Cabos authorities forced the closure of these businesses due to the heavy rain affecting the ability of street food vendors to preserve their food in a safe manner.

The last suspension was put in place only a few weeks ago, at the beginning of October. This was caused by the effect of hurricane Lidia, which led to the overflow of sewer water.

Should tourists worry about food safety in Los Cabos?

In light of what happened recently, people planning a trip to Los Cabos may now be wondering whether the food in this municipality is safe to consume. Luckily, the answer is yes.

In recent years, Los Cabos has established itself as one of the best destinations for foodies in Mexico.

Not by chance, according to recent data, more than one in ten people visiting this municipality does so to try the local cuisine and learn about the ancient cooking techniques typical of these lands.

Los Cabos is in fact home to several luxurious restaurants. One of these is surely Los Tamarindos.

Beachside Restaurant

This unique restaurant is entirely based on the innovative farm-to-table concept. This means that the food used for the dishes featured on its menu is mostly grown in the lands surrounding the restaurant itself.

This not only allows the chefs to use the freshest products but also to avoid most of the CO2 emissions caused by the transportation of ingredients from one part of the country to another.

Los Tamarindos has an ever-changing seasonal menu, always adapting to whatever the land has to offer.

Of course, this is only one of the many fine-dining restaurants in Los Cabos. Some of the other eateries worth mentioning include Sunset Monalisa, Ardea Restaurant, and Agua.

Considering the amount of incredibly luxurious restaurants in the Los Cabos municipality, tourists coming here to enjoy a foodie experience shouldn’t worry too much about food safety. In fact, here they will find plenty of locations where to eat in complete safety.

On top of this, the Los Cabos government is always making sure that all the street vendors in the municipality follow the hygiene rules issued by the state to avoid causing sickness and diseases.
