Los Cabos’ beaches are popular for a number of reasons, but one of the main reasons is because of their Blue Flag Certification system.

The Blue Flag Certification: What Does It Mean?

The distinguished blue flag certification is the universal sign to beach-goers that particular beaches with this distinction are safe, environmentally friendly, and amazingly biodiverse.

According to Los Cabos’ website, the Blue Flag Certification is defined as “an internationally recognized eco-certification awarded to destinations that meet and adhere to stringent environmental, educational, safety, and accessibility standards.”

Meeting approximately 33 stringent requirements, blue flag beaches are far and few in-between in other countries, but not in Mexico.

Mexico’s 25 blue flag beaches adhere to these specific criteria to ensure the biodiversity found in the Sea of Cortez is preserved and that travelers can enjoy a safe and fun vacation at the beach.

In an effort to uphold the Blue Flag standards, Los Cabos beaches with this certification are limited to 30% capacity daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

3 Beaches Skyrocket in Popularity

This summer vacation season alone, three particular Baja Californian Sur beaches have seen an increase of 70% in visitors.

With record-high tourism rates, Los Cabos has continued to rise in terms of popularity as a vacation destination in 2023.

Frequently visited on the weekends, here are the three beaches in the northern part of the Los Cabos region that tourists have been visiting the most this summer and why they’re becoming so popular.

La Ribera

At La Ribera beach, anything is possible.

As a blue flag-designated beach, you can certainly comfortably swim in the sapphire waters and relax in the peaceful ocean waves.

With a wide variety of water activities to choose from, you can kayak, paddle-board, snorkel, dive, fish, and more.

You can also explore the land itself and connect with nature on the beach by hiking, biking, camping, or just laying out on the sand.

You can even bring your furry loved one as the beach is dog-friendly

La Gaviota

Another blue flag beach, La Gaviota also happens to be swimmable and dog-friendly, so you can take your whole family out for a vacation day at the beach.

ADA-friendly, the public beach is free for all to enter and has something for everyone.

In addition to tanning on the beach, you can participate in a boat tour and participate in sport fishing for fish, including Blue Marlin, Tuna, Dorado, and more.

You can snorkel, fish, and swim to your heart’s content in the gentle azure waves at Playa La Gaviota.

El Surgidero

At El Surgidero Beach in Los Cabos, you can swim with your pup without worrying about strong swells or contaminated waters.

The blue flag-certified beach isn’t typically overcrowded because of the capacity rule, so you can spread out and enjoy the ocean breeze without squeezing your beach chair in with the crowds.

Bring a book, sports gear, or just sunglasses and a hat to read, get some Vitamin D, or play in the sand with your friends and family.

At El Surgidero Beach, you can make long-lasting memories.
