This Iconic 1940s Hotel In La Paz Will Open This November After Extensive Renovations

The pearl of La Paz hospitality is about to be restored.

In November, the iconic Hotel Perla in La Paz will reopen to guests bringing back a feel of the old-time classic La Paz style.

The New Pearl

After a $200 million peso ($10 million dollar) multi-year renovation, the legendary Hotel Perla Hotel in La Paz will be back. Its 90 rooms will harken back to a time gone by when La Paz was just a sleepy little Mexican beachside town.

The hotel, located in the golden zone of the boardwalk, is one of the oldest in town. While respecting the La Paz tradition that it is, it will also feature some new modern touches.

Hamak Hotels, the redeveloper, first is reducing the room count from 110 to 90 to give the hotel a more intimate boutique beachside resort feel.

It will also feature a spacious gym, a terrace with an infinity pool, a spa area for hotel guests and visitors, and a second-floor restaurant with dramatic ocean views.

La Perla will retain the art deco look that characterized the hotel and its boardwalk entrance.

La Cabaña Nightclub

The famous La Cabaña nightclub that once was inside Hotel Perla will now be converted to a restaurant for guests and visitors to step back in time to the history of the hotel and La Paz.

The interior of the restaurant will feature classic art deco geometric designs with a more updated feel for the new century. In part, it will be restored to the traditional design elements it lost during several attempts to remodel the property with a more modern look.

The Mechudo Room

Meanwhile, where the Mechudo room was located, guests will also enjoy a new life in the renovated Hotel Perla Hotel.

It will be reinvented as a commercial area with 600 square meters of space dedicated in part to the local arts of La Paz.

Painters, sculptors and other artists from all over the area will be invited to draw inspiration from the room’s amazing view of sea to create pieces that represent La Paz and its important connection to the ocean and Sea of Cortez.

The Soul of Hotel Perla

Hamak Hotels, a Mexican developer of boutique hotel resorts across Mexico, is dedicated to keeping the original look and feel of the more than 80-year-old property with a touch of class that represents the culture of La Paz today.

They traditionally have oriented their properties to have a local look and feel, along with having a focus on being an integral part of the community and the neighborhood.

More than 200 local workers alone have been hired to restore the former glory of Hotel Perla.

How it Fits With La Paz

La Paz itself is going through a transition of sorts with its focus on hospitality.

Recently, city officials have oriented their tourism outreach more towards the domestic traveler, leaving the more seasoned international visitor to its sister, Los Cabos — making La Paz a wonderful more off-the-beaten-path destination for Americans.

Tourism officials also want to upgrade the La Paz experience to serve more luxury and upscale-oriented travelers. They have even launched training classes to elevate the service skills of the local hospitality workers in La Paz.

Additionally, they recently announced a focus on gastronomy and sports-oriented travelers. This looks like an effort to court the more upscale foodie dining segment along with the sporting event traveler for events like marathons and even off-road racing.

In fact, the reopening of Hotel Perla is time to be around the time that La Paz serves as the kickoff city for the reverse SCORE Baja 100 off-road race.

If it all works out, Hotel Perla could once again shine as the beautiful pearl of La Paz.
