The city of La Paz, the capital of Baja California Sur, is located about two hours from the tourist destination of Los Cabos.

It’s been growing in popularity in recent years and has many of the same amenities that Los Cabos has to offer.

In fact, according to the director of Municipal Tourism, La Paz is expecting to have over 7 percent more visitors this summer than last year, when it received almost 11,000 tourists during the season.

La Paz’s Growing Popularity

Growth in tourism of 7 percent may not sound like much, but for a city only recently gaining attention as a tourist destination, it’s quite an increase in tourism.

The director commented on the increase, stating that La Paz is “a destination that attracts people mainly for our paradisiacal beaches and this offer of alternative tourism, an adventure tourism, a relaxation tourism, a tourism that allows you to connect with both nature and the community.”

But there are six main reasons for this charming city near Los Cabos growing in popularity with tourists:

Authenticity

The colonial architecture, the historic downtown area, its Mexican and seafood restaurants, and even the people give La Paz the image of authenticity.

Unlike in Los Cabos, it isn’t all massive, towering resorts in La Paz.

Instead, you’ll find more charming hotels that contribute to the authentic vibe of the city, which was founded in the 16th century.

Nature

In addition to some exceptional beaches, there are many other options for spending time in nature in La Paz.

There is a beautiful island where all kinds of sea life thrive, Isla Espíritu Santo, a reptile and bird sanctuary, and even mountains to explore.

La Paz is also a great place for camping and glamping if you want to forgo the resort for a more natural experience.

Beaches

One of the most well-known beaches in La Paz, due to its stunning white sand and crystal clear turquoise water, is Balandra Beach, or Playa Balandra.

This particular beach placed number three in TripAdvisor’s Traveler’s Choice Awards Top 10 Beaches in Mexico.

But there are multiple beaches in La Paz that may not be quite as beautiful as Balandra Beach but are pretty darn close, including Pichilingue Beach, Ensenada Grande, and Playa El Coromuel.

Art And Culture

La Paz is known for being an artist community too, and you’ll find art from both Mexican and international artists throughout the city.

There are also plenty of places to explore the authentic cultural side of the historic city as well.

Historic buildings, such as the Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace, which dates back to 1861, museums, like the Regional Museum of Anthropology and History, and the historic downtown area are all fantastic places to delve into the history and culture of the area.

Boutique Style Hotels

For travelers that aren’t too keen on the huge, sprawling hotel properties, La Paz will be a welcomed alternative.

While there are some larger hotel properties in La Paz, you’ll find smaller, boutique-style hotels than you will in Los Cabos.

Some of the most popular boutique hotels include Hotel Posada Luna Sol, La Posada Hotel & Beach Club, and Hotel Catedral La Paz.

Not only is La Paz known for its great seafood and Mexican dining options, but there are some fantastic waterfront dining spots too.

You can kick back and take in the views of the surrounding Sea of Cortez and the waterfront Malecón promenade while dining on delicious, authentic, fresh dishes from various waterfront restaurants.

Some of the highly-rated options include SeaSide Restaurant, Oyster House by FISM, The Dock Cafe, and Anzuelo Cocina Del Mar.
