If you came to Los Cabos dreaming of floating in that turquoise water all day and then you showed up to big surf and warning flags… yeah, that can be a mood killer for about 30 seconds.
But here’s the thing: a “no-swim” day doesn’t ruin a Cabo beach day. Not even close.
We at The Cabo Sun have spent a ton of time on these beaches, and honestly, some of our favorite “Cabo moments” happen with zero ocean time.
You just pivot!

Not All Cabo Beaches Are Swimmable
Cabo is known for having a ton of beaches that aren’t actually swimmable. So much so that we even built a tool for our readers to check before they book their hotels.
The city literally tells visitors to pay attention to the flag system, with black meaning the beach is closed and red signaling danger, and to ask lifeguards if you’re unsure.
Even the U.S. Embassy reminds travelers that some beaches have strong undercurrents/rip tides and may not have lifeguards or clear warnings.
But that doesn’t mean your beach day has to be ruined. Let’s talk about how to still have the best day ever.

1) Turn it into a legendary beach walk (sunrise or golden hour hits different)
Cabo is basically built for long, dramatic walks. The coastline is wild in the best way, and when the waves are pumping, it’s honestly kind of epic to watch from a safe distance.
Depending on how far you walk, you’ll encounter spots that look (emphasis on LOOK) peaceful, and rocky areas that shoot sea spray into the air in the most dramatic and pretty way. Be sure to bring your phone for pics!
Beach Addict-to-Beach Addict tips:
- Walk higher up on the sand, not right where waves are washing in. We’ve seen people get called out even just for dipping their toes in (see our reel below), so keep a safe distance!
- Don’t climb around wet rocks or tidey areas just for a photo.
- Bring water and sunscreen, because Cabo sun is sneaky.
- If you do one thing, do this: take the walk around sunset. Cabo sunsets are basically unfair to the rest of the world, mindblowing in the best way.
2) Make “lounging” your main activity (with drink service, obviously)
If the ocean is off-limits, you lean into the other Cabo specialty: max relaxation, minimal effort. Whether it’s a beach club vibe or a laid-back resort with beach wait staff, spending a day sipping by the ocean is one of the best ways to take in one of Cabo’s best features, it’s gorgeous beaches.
This is the move:
- Grab a lounger that’s set back from the waterline.
- Get shade (palapa, umbrella, whatever you can claim first).
- Order something cold and let the waves be your background music.
And yes, this counts as a real beach day. You’re in Cabo. That’s the whole point.

3) Do the palapa trifecta: read, nap, repeat
Unswimmable beach days are elite reading days.
Something about the sound of the surf makes you actually focus for once, and then suddenly you wake up two chapters later with a mild sun-kissed glow and no regrets.
Tiny upgrades that make it even better:
- Bring a light layer (wind + shade can feel cooler than you expect)
- Reapply sunscreen even if you’re “not moving”
- If you’re napping, set a timer unless you want to wake up at “oops it’s dinner time” (and you’re skin is fried 😬)
- Our personal fave? Bring a Kindle instead of a paper book. The higher-end models are even waterproof, perfect for a day by the pool or sea.

4) Treat the ocean like a show, not a challenge
When conditions are rough, the water can be gorgeous and violent at the same time. Which is exactly why you watch it like you’re at a front-row event, not like you’re about to test your luck.
Fun, safe “ocean energy” ideas:
- Photos and videos of the waves (they look insane when the surf is up)
- A beach picnic in a spot that’s comfortably back from the shoreline
- People-watching, which Cabo is undefeated at
Also, if you’re here in winter, keep your eyes on the water. Los Cabos is a big whale-watching destination from December through April (with February being the ‘Golden Window’), so you can sometimes spot action even from land (sometimes even before the season begins like in our reel below!)
5) Get your “water time” the smart way: pools, boat days, and swimmable spots (when they’re actually safe)
If you’re itching to get wet, Cabo still has you covered. You just do it in a way that isn’t a roll of the dice. It’s NEVER recommended to get in the ocean unless you know for a fact it is safe. Green flags are your friend, and if there is every any doubt, ask a lifeguard!
A few safer pivots:
- Pool day (resort pools do not care what the ocean is doing). One of our faves has the longest lazy river in Cabo, perfect for sipping and dipping at the same time.
- Boat tour for the views, the breeze, and the iconic coastline from the water
- If you really want to swim, do it only when conditions are right and only where it’s known to be swimmable that day, using the flag system as your non-negotiable. It’s so important that we even made our own ultimate guide here if you want to learn before you go.

You can walk forever, lounge like a professional, disappear under a palapa with a book, watch the ocean do its dramatic thing, and still get your water fix in safer ways.
Cabo is not just a swimming destination. It’s a stare-at-the-ocean-and-feel-lucky-to-be-here destination.
