If you’ve been following the decade-long soap opera between Uber and the authorities, you probably have one question: “Can I just use the app like a normal person in 2026?”
The answer is a frustrating mix of “Yes, absolutely” and “Don’t even try it.”
Here at The Cabo Sun, we have tracked every court ruling, protest, and loophole since ride-sharing arrived in Baja. While 2025 brought a flurry of legal wins for Uber, a federal clampdown late last year has effectively frozen the progress at the arrivals curb.

Here is the real-time reality of using Uber at Los Cabos International Airport (SJD) in 2026.
The Easy Part: Taking Uber TO The Airport
Let’s start with the good news. Taking an Uber from your hotel TO the airport is completely legal, safe, and stress-free.
Drivers are fully authorized to drop passengers off at the departure terminals. You don’t need to hide in the front seat or pretend to be the driver’s cousin anymore.
- The Cost: It is significantly cheaper than a taxi. A ride that might cost $80 USD in a standard cab will often run $30-$45 USD in an Uber.
- The Tolls: If your route takes the toll road (which it should), the cost is automatically calculated and added to your final bill in the app. You do not need to fumble for cash at the toll booth.

The Hard Part: Taking Uber FROM The Airport
This is where the reality check kicks in. Despite what you might have read about a Supreme Court victory, you cannot simply walk out of the arrivals terminal and hop in an Uber at the curb.
In late 2025, the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT) clarified that while Uber is legal in Mexico, airports are “Federal Zones” that require specific federal license plates—which Uber drivers do not have.
This means the National Guard still patrols the terminals, and drivers are terrified of the massive fines (up to $2,500 USD) for picking up tourists.

The Two “Workarounds” (And Why They Suck)
Because the app will technically let you request a ride at SJD, travelers often try to game the system. Here are the two common methods, and why we don’t recommend them for most people.
1. The “Departures Level” Hack Some savvy travelers head upstairs to the Departures area (where drop-offs happen) to catch a ride, as it is less policed than Arrivals.
- The Risk: While this often works, it is still technically unauthorized. If the National Guard is doing a sweep, your driver will cancel on you while you are standing on the curb with your luggage.

2. The “OXXO Walk” This is the only 100% legal way to take an Uber. You must walk off federal airport property to the public highway.
- The Reality: This involves dragging your suitcases 10-15 minutes down a dusty sidewalk in the Baja heat to the OXXO convenience store across the highway. It is cheap, but it is a miserable way to start a vacation.

Uber vs. Private Transfer

The Verdict: Just Pre-Book A Shuttle
We love Uber for getting around downtown Cabo or San Jose. But for arrival at the airport, the stress isn’t worth the $30 savings.
You are already spending thousands on your vacation. Do not start it by playing cat-and-mouse with federal police or dragging a roller bag through the dirt.
- The Pro Move: Pre-book a private transfer or a shared shuttle. They have the federal plates, they have the AC running, and they have the legal right to park right outside the exit door.
- The “Welcome” Perk: Top-rated providers like All Ways Cabo will even have a cold beer waiting for you. Try getting that from an Uber driver who is nervously watching the rearview mirror.
The Bottom Line
TO the airport? Uber is your best friend. FROM the airport? Delete the app and book a shuttle.
