2 Places People Feel More At Risk In Los Cabos According To New Report

Share The Article

In the latest ranking for urban security run by the Mexican Institute for data collection, INEGI, more than 75% of those polled in Los Cabos mentioned they felt safe within the city.

Part of these reports, though, include a list of places or situations in which people feel more at risk.

The report has revealed that people feel more at risk when they are going to the ATM or when traveling in any form of public transport.

In spite of the fact that 75% of Cabo locals reported feeling safe within the city, up to 73% of them said that they did get anxious while withdrawing cash from an ATM.

It was particularly machines located in open and very public places that made people feel more at risk.

When it comes to public transport, 65% of the people polled mentioned that they felt at risk when using these methods of transportation.

That number could be higher if we take into account that there’s potentially a large number of people polled who don’t use the public transport system at all.

Therefore, they would probably not consider that scenario as an overly risky one for them.

What Tourists Can Do To Stay Safe While At ATMs

It’s important to point out that the fact that people reported feeling unsafe at local ATMs doesn’t necessarily mean that these places are a crime hotbed that tourists should fully stay away from.

There are two main reasons, though, why people who go to ATMs can feel unsafe. Number one is the obvious fact that robbers could be waiting outside the bank or spot to attack people who’ve just withdrawn money from their accounts.

The other has to do with potential credit card fraud. There have been reported cases throughout Mexico of operations with tampered ATMs that served as the basis of massive fraud schemes.

For tourists, one of the best ways to stay safe is to use ATMs from banks that are not located near the most crowded parts of the city.

Also, heading to the bank earlier in the day rather than later can be a good way to feel safer as you process the transaction.

Another thing to keep in mind is that more and more places accept foreign credit cards. It’s a good idea to still carry pesos around, especially when exploring downtown San Jose del Cabo.

A lot of the smaller venues there may not accept credit cards. Even then, carrying as little cash as possible may be the best way to feel safe.

Again, just as a reminder, the ranking does not indicate that ATMs or public transport are inertly dangerous in Cabo.

Not Using The Public Transport System May Just Be The Way To Feel Safe While In Cabo

Having to ride shoulder to shoulder with strangers on a cramped bus is a situation that can make many people feel unsafe or uncomfortable. This is an issue that many popular tourism destinations share.

Tight spaces filled with large crowds that can’t even escape the situation can be a hotbed for pickpockets.

However, most tourists that come to Cabo aren’t going to be using public buses anyway.

What tourists can do to avoid this method of transportation is to book private tours to the different spots within the region that they want to visit. This can also include a private shuttle from the Cabo airport to the hotel or Airbnb.

Without a doubt, private methods of transportation are going to be more expensive than public transport. The extra cost could be worth it if these situations are a cause for anxiety amongst travelers.

Another method of transportation that’s not necessarily specified in these rankings are taxis. They can also be a cause of anxiety for some travelers.

Once again, the ranking is not based on the number of incidents that have occurred. Those rankings were actually released recently, and we covered some of the more common safety issues that took place.

When it comes to taxis, what travelers should always make a point to do is set a fixed rate before the start of the trip.

They should also make sure that they don’t leave any belongings behind. It’s typically much harder to get misplaced items back from a cab company than it would be from a ride-share app.
