Why Your Cabo Airport Ride Could Take Up To 2 Hours Right Now

Share The Article

You land, you grab your bag, and you can practically taste the welcome margarita. But right now, for thousands of travelers, that first sip is getting pushed back by about 90 minutes.

Our team on the ground has been monitoring a massive traffic bottleneck that is currently choking the main artery from the airport into the tourist corridor.

According to the latest reports, construction crews are moving heavy machinery and concrete beams to build a new underpass at the “Las Mujeres Libres” roundabout (known to locals as the Fonatur roundabout) in San José del Cabo.

The result? Gridlock. Here is what is happening and, more importantly, how you can try to beat it.

The Bottleneck: What Is Happening?

If you are driving from the SJD International Airport towards Cabo San Lucas, you have to pass through the roundabout that is under construction.

Right now, the construction zone at the roundabout has turned the Transpeninsular Highway into a parking lot.

Drivers are reporting that the stretch from Valerio González Street to the construction site—a distance that usually takes minutes—is taking up to an hour just to clear.

The “2-Hour” Reality:

Local reports confirm that total travel time from the airport to the hotels in Cabo San Lucas can now exceed 2 hours during peak times.

Octavio Silvas Angulo, the president of CANACINTRA Los Cabos, pointed out that the situation is made worse because the detours aren’t well-marked. Tourists who don’t know the back roads are getting funneled into the construction zone, creating a massive choke point.

The Worst Times To Drive

If your flight lands or departs during these windows, you are in the danger zone.

  • Morning Rush: Around 8:00 AM.
  • Evening Rush: Around 6:00 PM.

This isn’t just affecting arrivals. If you have a flight home in the evening, you need to leave your resort much earlier than the standard “3 hours before” rule.

Getting there early is better than being late! And you can always spend your time in the VIP Lounge before your flight if you have the time.

The Pro Move: How To Bypass It

If you are heading to a resort in Cabo San Lucas or the Pacific Side (Nobu, Hard Rock, Diamante), do not take the main highway through town.

Take the Toll Road (The Libramiento).

When you leave the airport rental car area, you will see signs for the Cuota (Toll Road).

  • The Cost: It costs a few dollars (have pesos ready), your driver will often include it in your cost if getting private transport.
  • The Route: It bypasses the entire city of San José del Cabo and dumps you out near the Medano Beach area.
  • The Savings: You completely skip the Fonatur construction mess.

Note: If you are staying in San José del Cabo (Hotel Zone or Puerto Los Cabos), you unfortunately have to brave the traffic, as the Toll Road won’t help you get to those specific hotels.

The Reality: If your hotel is in San José del Cabo or Puerto Los Cabos, the Toll Road won’t help you.

Advice: Pack patience and a roadie. You have to brave the construction zone.

The Bottom Line

Authorities have orange barrels out, and traffic police are directing flow, but heavy machinery is unpredictable.

If you are coming down this week, pack some patience (and maybe a roadie). The infrastructure upgrades will be amazing when they are finished, but right now, they are a headache you need to plan for.
