Baja California Sur is world-renowned for its stunning coastlines and luxury resorts, but sometimes you just need an escape from the high-energy crowds.
When I packed my bags and headed up to La Paz back in mid-March, I was instantly reminded of exactly why this city is such a hidden gem.
If you are looking for a getaway that feels way more laid back and chill than Cabo, you need to turn your attention north.
Offering incredible nature and gorgeous beaches without the overwhelming hustle, La Paz is quickly becoming the ultimate escape for tourists seeking an authentic, stress-free vacation.

🌴 The Unmatched, Chill Atmosphere
While Cabo San Lucas is famous for its bustling resort corridors and vibrant nightlife, La Paz operates at a completely different pace. I can personally attest to just how relaxing it is to spend an afternoon here.
- A Hassle-Free Beach Experience: Unlike some of the heavily trafficked beaches down south, you can relax on the pristine sand here for hours without a single vendor hounding you to buy souvenirs.
- A Charming Downtown: The city boasts a highly walkable, charming downtown area centered around a beautiful malecón (boardwalk) that perfectly hugs the Sea of Cortez.
- Incredible Nature: The region is deeply connected to its natural surroundings. You get unparalleled access to incredible marine life, hidden coves, and world-class snorkeling in crystal-clear, calm waters (with whale sharks too!).

🛡️ A Proactive Approach to Safety
Beyond the relaxed vibe, the absolute best part of visiting La Paz is how exceptionally secure it feels. Walking around the city and exploring the beaches, I felt super, super safe the entire time.
That feeling of security is not just anecdotal; the city currently boasts a phenomenal score of 83/100 on our safety index, making it one of the most secure coastal destinations you can visit.
This high level of safety is no accident—it is the result of strict, proactive coordination by local authorities.
Recently, a violent confrontation between the military and an armed group in the Santa Anita area of Los Cabos made headlines.
Instead of waiting around, the La Paz City Council immediately announced it would reinforce its own security measures through greater coordination across all levels of government to ensure that violence does not travel north.

Here is exactly how local officials are actively keeping La Paz a secure bubble for both locals and tourists:
- Increased Police Presence: Mayor Milena Quiroga Romero confirmed the municipality is heavily funding the Municipal Police, increasing the number of officers actively patrolling the streets.
- Mixed Operations Bases (BOM): The city runs a permanent surveillance scheme that integrates municipal, state, and federal forces—including the Navy and National Guard. These patrols cover the city center and surrounding communities like El Pescadero.
- Targeted Arrests: Through tight inter-agency teamwork, authorities are successfully capturing priority targets involved in property crimes, keeping the streets safe.
- Cyber Security Upgrades: The city is even fighting crime digitally, having just inaugurated a brand-new Municipal Cyber Police unit this past May to expand its investigation capabilities.

🌊 The Ultimate Baja Escape
By maintaining a heavy, highly coordinated territorial presence, La Paz ensures that the occasional localized incidents seen in other municipalities never disrupt its peaceful environment.
If you want to experience the absolute best of the Baja peninsula—from swimming alongside incredible marine life to enjoying some world-class seafood on the malecón—without sacrificing a single ounce of your peace of mind, La Paz is the destination you have been looking for.
