Los Cabos is known as one of the best places to go whale watching because thousands of whales migrate to the destination every winter.

It only makes sense, then, that nearby La Paz is a great place to see whales too, and it’s common to see them in the waters not far from the city.

This is why this destination near Los Cabos is also one of the best places for whale watching.

The Whale Watching Season In La Paz

Whale-watching season in La Paz starts a little bit later than in Los Cabos.

The official start of the season is January 28th, but according to reports whales are already being spotted in the destination.

Last year, around 200 gray whales were spotted in Puerto Chale, a.k.a Magdalena Bay, which sits on the Pacific side of La Paz, by the end of the season.

Where To See Whales In La Paz

The Bay of La Paz, due to its close proximity to the Sea of Cortez, is a great place to see whales in La Paz.

The calm waters of the bay make it pretty easy to see the whales when they’re nearby.

The even better spot to go whale watching near La Paz, though, is Puerto Chale, which as mentioned previously, sits on the Pacific Ocean.

This area is positioned along the whales’ migration path, a couple of hours from La Paz.

La Paz Whale Watching Tours

Just like in Los Cabos, there are whale-watching tours in La Paz that you can book.

Many of these tours will take you to Puerto Chale for your whale-watching tour because there is typically such a high concentration of whales in this area.

Whale-watching tours in La Paz are a little pricier than in Los Cabos, starting at around $200 a person for many tours.

Types Of Whales You Might See In La Paz

There are several different types of whales you can see in La Paz.

Blue whales, sperm whales, or even humpback whales can all be spotted in La Paz.

What you’re more likely to see more than any other whale, though, are gray whales.

La Paz Day Trip Vs. Overnight Stay

While you can certainly take a day trip to La Paz for a whale-watching tour, you might want to spend a day or two in the city.

It takes about two hours to get to La Paz from Los Cabos, and many whale-watching tours depart from La Paz by 9 am, so you’ll have to leave pretty early for a day trip.

Another reason to spend a couple of days in La Paz is because it is a charming city with a lot to offer.

Visiting The City Of La Paz

La Paz is the capital city of the state that is also home to Los Cabos, the state of Baja California Sur.

La Paz has beautiful beaches and stunning natural scenery similar to Los Cabos.

The historic city is full of culture, charm, and authenticity and has a thriving art scene and some fantastic Mexican food.

How To Get To La Paz

The easiest, and one of the most cost-effective ways, to get to La Paz is by renting a car and making the roughly two-hour drive.

If you’re not comfortable driving in Mexico there are other options, though.

Booking a taxi or private transportation can be costly, as much as a couple hundred dollars each way, but a safe way to get to La Paz if you don’t want to drive.

The other option is booking a tour, which ranges in price depending on what’s included.
