In recent years, Los Cabos has become popular among tourists all over the world thanks to its exciting activities, luxury resorts, and spectacular beaches.
Getting bored in Los Cabos is almost impossible, but there are times when visitors feel the need to leave the city and immerse themselves in the authentic Mexican culture.
Especially with the arrival of the high season when every corner of this little paradise on Earth seems to be crowded with people of all nationalities.
On those days, Miraflores, a little town located 45 minutes north of San José del Cabo, can be the ideal day-trip destination. But what are the benefits of visiting this charming town right now? Here are three reasons.
Cleaner than ever
The Los Cabos government has recently put in place an initiative whose aim is to clean and reforest several areas of its municipality. One of the towns chosen for this project is Miraflores.
Talking about this new initiative, Thalía de la Peña, the Coordinator of Ecology and Environment of the Miraflores delegation, declared: “This week, in the company of the area staff, we launched this reforestation [project]. We worked in advance (…) identifying the neighborhoods that needed to improve their green spaces.”
Thalía de la Peña also declared that prior to the beginning of the reforestation project, a few cleaning days will be carried out to improve the neighborhoods chosen for this initiative.
This means that visitors deciding to visit Miraflores soon will not only find the city cleaner than ever but may also see some of the new plants and trees planted here thanks to the reforestation projects and make the most out of these new green areas.
Escape the winter crowds
With the high season finally arriving in Los Cabos, tourists may now be wondering whether there are any areas near Cabo San Lucas or San José del Cabo, where to escape the winter crowds.
With a population of roughly 1,350 people, Miraflores is the ideal place to get some well-deserved privacy while fully immersing yourself in the most authentic Mexican laid-back lifestyle.
This small town was founded in the early 1700s, and here tourists will be able to buy local handcrafted items ranging from pottery, furniture, and leather goods.
On top of this, Miraflores is now renowned for its delicious cuisine. This town is surrounded by organic farms delivering their products to local eateries.
Unlike the main cities in the municipality, here foodies who choose Los Cabos for their vacation will be able to dine in delicious restaurants without having to book months in advance.
Miraflores is particularly known for its high-quality beef that gets distributed all over the Baja California Sur state.
Perfect weather for hiking
Miraflores is located just a few miles east of the famous Sierra de la Laguna. This UNESCO-designated biosphere reserve is renowned for its many hikes, ideal for those who want to explore Mexican nature.
With the highest peak reaching 2,090 meters in elevation, Sierra de la Laguna is the perfect place to spend your winter days, thanks to the milder temperatures typical of these months.
Hikers heading to this reserve during this period will be able to enjoy their walks without having to worry about the oppressive heat and the constant sweat causing dehydration.
The Sierra de la Laguna is home to dry forests, pine-oak forests, and oak woodlands. This area is also known for the variety of animals that decided to make this place their home, with a total of over 130 bird species and mammals ranging from mule deers to bobcats and ornate shrews.
This makes Sierra de la Laguna one of the best parks to visit for nature lovers and animal spotters.
Visitors deciding to explore this reserve should, however, be aware of the recent increase in prices. In fact, due to its popularity, prices in the area have doubled in the last year.
