It’s the first hurdle of every international vacation: the dreaded immigration and customs line. For years, travelers to Los Cabos (SJD) braced for long, snaking queues, confusing paper forms, and an arrival process that could take an hour or more.
But what is the reality on the ground today?

We are thrilled to report that the arrival experience at SJD has been dramatically upgraded. On a recent trip this past week, our team at The Cabo Sun cleared the entire process—from deplaning to immigration kiosk to the final customs scanner—in less than 20 minutes.
This incredible speed is thanks to new technology and a more streamlined system. However, before you celebrate, there are two crucial variables that will determine your experience: what time you land and whether you check a bag.
Here is a step-by-step breakdown of the new process and what you should realistically expect.
Step 1: Immigration (The New Digital Kiosks)
The single biggest time-saver is the elimination of the old, hand-written FMM tourist card for most travelers.
- The New Process: When you enter the immigration hall at Terminal 2, you will be directed to a bank of new digital kiosks or “E-gates”. You simply scan your passport, the machine takes your photo, and it prints a small receipt.
- The “Peak Time” Problem: Our 20-minute experience was on a heavy travel day. If your flight arrives in the afternoon—especially on a weekend between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM—you will likely be landing at the same time as 5-10 other planes. During these peak rushes, the line for the kiosks can still back up, and you should budget a realistic 30-45 minutes for this step.

Step 2: Baggage Claim & Customs (The Real Wait)
After you clear immigration, you head to baggage claim. This is now the real bottleneck of the entire arrival process. Once you get your bags, you then take that receipt and your passport to an agent for a quick, final review.
You will then push a button.
Red light: Yours bags will be scanned.
Green light: You can proceed to the exit.
- What to Expect: Based on countless traveler reports, you should expect to wait 20-30 minutes or more for your checked luggage to appear on the carousel.
- The Pro-Tip: The fastest way to get to your resort is to travel with only a carry-on. If you do this, you can skip the baggage claim wait entirely and walk straight from immigration to customs.
- The “Bag Stack” Quirk: SJD airport staff often pull bags off the carousel quickly to make room for new ones. If you don’t see your bag, check the floor area around the carousel—it’s probably in one of the stacks.

Your Realistic Timeline
So, to answer the traveler’s question about an afternoon arrival:
- Best-Case Scenario (Carry-on only, no other planes): You can be through everything and outside in 10 minutes.
- Worst-Case Scenario (Peak Saturday at 1 PM, checked bags): You should budget 60 minutes from deplaning to the curb.

Final Warning: The “Shark Tank”
After you pass the final customs checkpoint, you will exit through two consecutive rooms filled with timeshare salespeople. This is famously known as the “shark tank.” They will try to stop you, ask for your transportation voucher, ask who your transportation provider is, or offer you a “free” taxi.
Do not stop. A firm, polite “No, gracias” and keep walking. Your real transportation is outside the terminal doors. Your transportation company will have provided you with a numbered area to meet your driver.

Happy travels!
